Runestone and beautiful photo opportunity 🤙

Beijershamn Nature Reserve, located on Öland Island, is renowned for its rich biodiversity and cultural history. It features diverse habitats including lush deciduous forests, beach meadows, reed stands, and open water areas, making it a haven for wildlife enthusiasts. The reserve is famous for being one of Öland's prime bird habitats, hosting around 250 to 260 bird species, including rare visitors like the Bar-tailed Godwit and Peregrine Falcon. Visitors can explore three main trails of varying lengths, including a unique walk along the old harbor pier. It is also a notable butterfly habitat with over 650 species observed here. Bird-watching towers, platforms, and hides offer excellent wildlife viewing opportunities. Informative signs along the trails provide insight into the local ecology and history. The area supports diverse bat species, thanks to the abundance of insects. Beijershamn is wheelchair-accessible and has facilities such as parking and picnic spots. This nature reserve is an ideal destination for peaceful walks and immersive nature experiences year-round.

Typical Öland farm.

This is the opening stretch of the Dröstorp vandringsled hiking path. It's a beautiful walk through numerous different environments, and dry and wet meadows. The flora is also wonderfully varied.

Dröstorp village was established around the end of the 17th century and was abandoned at the end of the 19th century. Traces of graves and mounds to the southwest of the village site suggest that the area was inhabited as far back as the Iron Age.

Watch your feet whilke navigating across the cracked limestone slabs. If you're following the Bårby Källa hiking path, it's best to do the loop in a counterclockwise direction, as the cairns which mark the trail are easier to spot.

Beautiful Alvar landscape.The path follows small ridgestones and plateaus mainly across limestone rocks. After the snowy season or significant rainful the trail can become waterlogged.

The Karlevistenen is one of the more remarkable runestones in Sweden. The 130 centimetre high boulder is made of volcanic porphyry granite and therefore definitely does not come from the island, but most likely from the Oskarshamn region. Part of the inscription states that the stone was set for a warrior named Sibbe, son of Foldar. In fact, there is an old drawing from the 17th century that shows a runestone and two burial mounds there. The graves have since been levelled by agricultural use, only the stone remains. The other part of the inscription consists of a skaldic verse. This text clearly shows that a great Danish warrior, probably a chieftain, was buried at this site. The Karlevistenen is unique in terms of this verse. It is the only known poem by an Old Norse skald written in runic script that still exists in the original.
