With 9,121 feet, Atalaya Mountain is one of the highest peaks around the city of Santa Fe. It is part of the Sangre de Cristo Range. Up here, you will be treated with a stunning view towards Santa Fe, Sun Mountain, Picacho Peak and Thompson Peak.

The Visitor Center offers some great information about trails, campgrounds and geology of the National Park. There are restrooms and potable water is available. You can buy some merchandise and maps or just enjoy the cooler temperatures during summer time. The Visitor Center is open every day of the year except Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day.

From the The Upper Slide Trail Trailhead, or Cascabel Trailhead, you can access the northeastern end of the popular Slide Trail, which links up to the Orilla Verde Campground and Taos Junction Bridge and Boat Launch. There are several parking spaces and vault toilets here for you to use, which are good to know about if hiking up from the Taos Overlook Trailhead that does not have any facilites.

A beautiful trail alongside Mosca Creek that meanders through the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. While you get occassional glimpses of the famous sand dunes, most of the views on the trail are of the surroundings mountains. The trees are particularly fascinating here, often bent due to the way the wind whips through the valley.
