Only recommended in perfect conditions. The entire route is perhaps the worst hiking trail I've ever done. Unless you enjoy 12km + 800m of climbing stairs.

Don’t expect too much: small pond and only if the conditions are right you see reflections. I found this a typical “instagram v.s. reality” spot. 😉 Mt Taranaki is impressive tough and beautiful area for hiking!

TARANAKI means radiating streaky clouds - a sign of bad weather. He tohu āwha ngā kapau titi taranaki (Te Ara 2015). / Radiating streaky clouds indicate stormy weather.

Great place to start the e.g the Pouakai Crossing (make sure to book the shuttle in advance) or the summit hike.

Don’t expect to get the perfect picture on the first try. Most of the times the water will cast little waves from the winds or mount Taranaki will be covered by clouds. It is really beautiful though no matter the condition 👍🏼 Just do not expect to get the 10/10 Instagram picture. Enjoy the moment, it’s better either way 😊

This German World War II naval mine was washed up on the rocks near Belt Road in New Plymouth in February 1943. It is believed that the floating mine was laid by a German warship off the coast of South Australia, but became detached from its moorings and was carried across the Tasman Sea by the westerly current. The sculpture cost $35,000 to design, manufacture and install and is a reminder that people are killed by military weapons.
