Landwasser Viaduct “142-meter-long and 65-meter-high bridge piers” The 142-meter-long Landwasser Viaduct is the landmark of the Rhaetian Railway. Landwasser Viaduct of the Rhaetian Railway A must-see for all railway enthusiasts – beauty and boldness combined. With its 65-meter-high, tapered piers, the viaduct is one of the most elegant bridge structures in Graubünden and the most photographed work of art on the Rhaetian Railway. The largest and most spectacular structure on the 63-kilometer-long Albula line between Thusis and St. Moritz. The Albula and Bernina lines of the Rhaetian Railway have been UNESCO World Heritage Sites since mid-July 2008, only the third railway line in the world to receive this distinction. The construction of the three main piers of the viaduct in 1901/1902 was an architectural masterpiece, as they were built without scaffolding using only two cranes. After 106 years, the masonry and track bed were repaired for the first time. The natural stone viaduct, made of limestone dolomite, is 142 meters long and spans the wild Landwasser Valley in a sweeping curve, leading directly into a tunnel whose entrance is located on the sheer rock face. From the village of Filisur, a footpath leads in half an hour to a beautiful viewpoint where the viaduct can be admired (and photographed). The path continues either down to the river, under the viaduct and into the gorge, or, at the fork in the path, to the viewpoint, continuing for two hours to the Wiesner Viaduct. This can also be crossed on foot, offering a unique experience with breathtaking views. Landwasser Viaduct (near Filisur station) The Landwasser Viaduct is a 65-meter-high and long railway bridge. Its pillars rise majestically 65 meters into the air: The Landwasser Viaduct on the Albula line allows the Rhaetian Railway to travel 141.7 meters over the roaring Landwasser River. In a wide curve, the viaduct leads directly into a steep rock face. This breathtaking structure is now the most photographed subject on the Rhaetian Railway line. But the history of the viaduct's construction is also remarkable: The Greek-Swiss engineer Alexander Acatos (1873-1950) was commissioned to design the viaduct. He was also the one who later planned the expansion of Zurich's main train station for the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB). Under Acatos's direction, the five limestone piers with six semicircular arches, each spanning 20 meters, were constructed starting in March 1901. For cost reasons, a new construction technique was developed: the piers were built without external scaffolding. Instead, iron scaffolding was embedded in the three longest piers and adjusted in height as construction progressed. The three iron scaffolds were connected by crossbeams to which electric construction cranes could be mounted. These cranes lifted the necessary building materials to the appropriate pier height. A mixture of lime mortar and sand was used to bond the stones of the piers. The mortar came from a factory in Unterterzen on Lake Walen and was transported to the construction site of the Landwasser Viaduct on a 0.75-meter gauge construction railway laid along the future route. After only about a year and a half of construction, the Landwasser Viaduct was completed in October 1902. The structure has proven resilient ever since: the Landwasser Viaduct only required minor repairs in 2009. Today, the Landwasser Viaduct remains the symbol of the Rhaetian Railway and, as an imposing structure, invites passengers, tourists, and locals to take photographs. Landwasser (river approx. 30 km long) The Landwasser is a river in the Landwasser Valley in the canton of Graubünden. It is approximately 30 kilometers long and originates in Davos from the confluence of the Flüelabach and the now-vanished Seebach, a stream that once flowed from Lake Davos. Landwasser: Davos & Landwasser Valley The Landwasser receives several streams within Davos itself. For example, the Dorfbach flows into it near the Davos Dorf train station, the Schiabach near the golf course, and the Dischmabach, a large stream flowing from the Dischma Valley. In Davos Platz, the Landwasser receives, among others, the Guggerbach, the Bolgenbach, the Carjölerbach, and the Albertibach. The river then leaves the town of Davos and flows southwest through the Landwasser Valley. Here, it is almost entirely channelized and straightened. In Davos Frauenkirch, the Landwasser is later joined first by the Frauenbach from the right, then by the Sertigbach from the Sertig Valley on the left, and finally by the Stuzibach from the right. In Davos Glaris, further streams are added from both sides of the valley (including the Bärentalerbach, the Rieberbach, and the Leidbach). In Davos Monstein, the valley narrows noticeably, and the Monsteinerbach flows into it. After Monstein, the Landwasser rushes down through the Zügen Gorge and then, below Wiesen, receives the Brüggentobelbach from the right. Shortly afterward, it flows under the famous Wiesen Viaduct. Landwasser: Confluence with the Albula The river now meanders, deeply carved into the landscape below the inhabited sunny terraces, toward Filisur. After Wiesen, it receives the Tieftobelbach from the right. Between Schmitten and Filisur, the Landwasser then flows under the world-famous Landwasser Viaduct of the Rhaetian Railway. Shortly after the viaduct, the Schmittnerbach stream joins it. The Landwasser has now reached the Albula Valley and flows into the Albula from the right between Alvaneu Bad and Filisur. The parish church of St. Mary is beautifully situated on a green hill outside the village center of Lantsch/Lenz. It was first documented in 831 and has been expanded several times over the centuries. While its exterior appearance is rather simple, the interior boasts intricate murals. The church is closed, but can be visited by appointment with the church's attendant.

The Roland Arena opened in 2013 and has been Switzerland's largest biathlon stadium ever since. Formerly known as the Lenzerheide Biathlon Arena, the arena can accommodate up to 15,000 spectators with additional stands. While the arena can be connected to Lenzerheide's 52-kilometer-long cross-country ski trail network in winter, there is a 600-meter-long roller ski track in summer.

Carp la Tretscha is the local name of this viewpoint near Lantsch/Lenz. From the rocky summit, it offers impressive views of the valley, the Lai da Solas, and the Albula. In addition to wooden benches, there's also a steel grill where you can grill something delicious over the fire while enjoying the panoramic view.

Hikers, bikers, and other day-trippers congregate here at the mid-station of the Parpaner Rothorn cable car. The place is a good and popular starting point for an adventure in the mountains above Lenzerheide. In addition to a restaurant, one of the highlights is Switzerland's largest marble run. And of course, the view from 1,905 meters above sea level is absolutely magnificent.

The reservoir on Alp Scharmoin is easily accessible from the Scharmoin mid-station. It is used in winter to make snow on the ski slopes. In summer, it makes a lovely stop on a hike. There are also benches where you can admire the view. Swimming is prohibited.
