The Minster of St. Mary and St. Mark is the Romanesque former monastery church of Reichenau Monastery and today's Catholic parish church[1] in the Mittelzell district on the island of Reichenau in Lake Constance (Untersee). This minster was the abbey church of the important Benedictine abbey (Latin: Monasterium Augiensis) and is the largest of the three Romanesque churches on the island. On the occasion of the monastery's 1,300th anniversary, Pope Francis elevated the minster to a minor basilica in April 2024. Since 2000, the monastery island of Reichenau, including the minster, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site; in 2003, ten major works of the Reichenau manuscripts were added to the UNESCO Memory of the World Register as "unique documents of cultural history that exemplify the collective memory of humanity." To mark the 1300th anniversary, the Great State Exhibition Baden-Württemberg 2024, entitled "World Heritage of the Middle Ages," presented manuscripts and other relics from the island from April to October 2024 at the Baden-Württemberg State Archaeological Museum in Konstanz on Lake Constance and on Reichenau itself. A citizens' project group created the "Reichenau Book of Solidarity 2024" for Reichenau Minster, a continuation of the Reichenau Book of Brotherhood of 824. In 724, the wandering monk Pirmin founded Reichenau Monastery with the help of the Franconian mayor of the palace, Charles Martel, and the Alemannic Duke Lantfrid. According to a founding charter dated April 25, 724, he brought forty monks with him to the island of Reichenau. The first wooden monastery church was built in 724 under the founding abbot Pirmin. Abbot Haito had a Carolingian basilica built on a cruciform ground plan, parts of which still survive today in the crossing and the east transept. It was consecrated on August 16, 816, in honor of the Virgin Mary. Source: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/M%C3%BCnster_St._Maria_und_Markus_(Reichenau-Mittelzell)

Decline and dissolution By a decree under Abbot Friedrich von Wartenberg (1427-1453), the monastery, which had been reserved for the high nobility, was also made accessible to the lower nobility. The Reichenau Abbey came to an end with Markus von Knöringen, abbot of the monastery from 1508-1516 and from 1523-1540. It was sold for a fee to the Bishop of Constance, Johann III von Weeze, who was enfeoffed with the imperial fief of the abbey by Charles V. The monastery continued to exist as a priory until it was dissolved in 1757. The Golden Age The golden age of Reichenau began with Abbot Waldo (786-806). He established the fame of the monastery school and the library. His successor, a man as influential as he was fond of art, was Abbot Heito I (806-823). Abbots Erlebald (823-838) and Ruadhelm (838-842) were followed by the abbey's peak under Abbot Walahfrid Strabo (842-849). Politically, Reichenau achieved unique political power under Abbot Hatto III (888-913). Around 1000, the eight panels of the central nave in the Ottonian style were created in the church of St. George, which makes St. George one of the art sites of Western rank. Under the abbots Eggehard I, Ruodman and Witigowo, Reichenau book painting reached its artistic peak. Hermann the Lame (born 1013, died 1054), monk of Reichenau, was already a famous personality during his lifetime. With him, the glorious era of the Benedictine Abbey of Reichenau also ended. Monastery history Saint Pirmin founded the Reichenau monastery in 724. It became one of the most important religious, cultural and political centers of the Middle Ages. The knowledge of humanity was collected in the libraries. The detailed monastery plan that was created on Reichenau, is kept in St. Gallen and is now being implemented on the medieval construction site of Campus Galli near Meßkirch. Or the "Hortulus" by Abbot Walahfrid Strabo, the first guide on the subject of gardening, in which 24 medicinal and culinary herbs are described. The corresponding garden is still maintained today not far from the cathedral and is open to visitors. Reichenau Monastery Gardens, near the Minster of St. Mary and St. Mark The Reichenau Monastery, founded in 724, produced two of the most important sources on the garden culture of the Middle Ages: the St. Gallen Monastery Plan and the poem "Hortulus" by the Reichenau monk and later abbot Walahfrid Strabo. The new monastery gardens interpret these sources, they recreate parts of them and establish a connection to the island's current garden culture. The gardens comprise three areas, all of which are located within the old monastery wall in the so-called "quiet district" of the former monastery and some of which have been archaeologically proven: the cloister, the Hortuli (gardens) with the herb garden and the monk's cemetery with orchard. St. Mary and St. Mark's Minster with treasury and monastery gardens The oldest church on the island is St. Mary and St. Mark's Minster, the former monastery church (founded in 724). The simple wooden building of the monastery's founder Pirmin became too small after just a few decades and was replaced by a 40 m long stone building in the 8th century. To the north of this, i.e. opposite the convent buildings that are still visible today, there was a cloister and a two-storey monks' house. These buildings were soon expanded too, because in the middle of the 9th century the island convent had 134 monks. While this monastery complex has only been preserved in underground traces, we can still trace the stages of development of the abbey church today. The eastern transept and the crossing arches come from the three-aisled cross basilica consecrated in 816, which Abbot Heito I had built. While Heito's crossing building remained unchanged for a long time, the western part of the abbey church was rebuilt several times. The westwork received its current appearance under Abbot Berno. It was consecrated shortly before his death in 1048 in the presence of Emperor Henry III. After the decline of the abbey, regular monastic life only began again with Abbot Friedrich von Wartenberg (1427-1435). He began building the Gothic choir in the east of the cathedral, which was not completed until the painting in 1555. After incorporation into the diocese of Constance in 1540, the monastery continued to exist as a priory. Prince-Bishop Jakob Fugger had new convent buildings built on the south side of the cathedral from 1605 to 1610. After the complex was completed, the "Old Monastery" on the north side was demolished. The monastery was dissolved in 1757. The Fugger "new" convent buildings now serve as a rectory and the seat of the municipal administration. The winegrowers' association presses Reichenau wine in the spacious cellar. In the cathedral's treasury, numerous reliquaries and other cult objects from the 5th to 18th centuries can be seen.
