There is documented evidence of winegrowing in Meersburg since 1324. The historic buildings from the early 18th century and the vineyards were owned by the Prince-Bishops of Constance until 1802/1803. During secularization, the winery fell to the Grand Duchy of Baden and became the first wine-growing domain in Germany as the Grand Ducal Baden Domain Winery. After the First World War, in 1919, it was renamed Meersburg State Winery. As the legal successor to the state of Baden, the state winery now belongs to the state of Baden-Württemberg. In the course of the secularization of 1802/03 by Napoleon, the prince-bishop's winery fell to the young Grand Duchy of Baden and became the first wine-growing domain in Germany as the "Großherzoglich-Badische Domainkellerei". It regularly invites you to wine tastings, guided tours and other events. The documented beginning of viticulture in Meersburg is also the beginning of the winery of the Prince Bishops of Konstanz, which centuries later was to become a state winery. In the annual book of the Bishop's Church of Constance in 1210 a vineyard of Manegoldus von Rohrdorf am Ufer in Meersburg is mentioned, which - for lack of heirs - fell together with the castle to the Bishop of Constance Konrad II von Tegerfelden. The walls and vineyards of the Meersburg State Winery have a tradition that goes back over 800 years. The imposing wine cellar with a view of the lake was built in the former city moat.
