Here you'll find numerous information panels about flora, fauna, and wildlife. This chapel is located directly on an easily accessible circular route through Lathen and Kapellenmoor. The hiking trail is directly adjacent. The observation tower offers a beautiful view of the landscape and the adjacent tree nurseries. Everything you see is in immaculate condition.

This information and rest hut is worth a visit. Sponsored by Volksbank Emstal, it was lovingly restored by members of the Historical Agriculture Working Group, spending over 1,000 hours on it. It is to be hoped that this condition will continue for a long time to come. Numerous informational displays about flora, fauna, and wildlife are inviting not only for adults but also for children. Right next door is a viewing tower overlooking the Kapellenmoor.

Old lock The first lock chamber was built in 1896 using the embankment construction method and was put into operation with the completion of the Dortmund-Ems Canal in 1899. It is 165 m long, 10 m wide and is closed with two stem gates. New lock Parallel to the old lock, another, wider lock chamber was built in 1955/56. It is 165 m long and 12 m wide. Between 2013 and 2015, the facility was completely renovated and brought up to date at a cost of around 8 million euros. The lock was given new sliding gates and was set up for remote control and monitoring from the Meppen control center. Since not all work could be carried out during ongoing operations, the new lock had to be closed temporarily and shipping had to be diverted via the old lock. As part of this work, the lock bridge was also completely replaced in 2013.

After the refuge and the observation tower were built, a hiking trail called "Kapellengraben" was set up. It is a largely natural path with several comfortable resting places in the course of which a second observation tower was built (around September 2021). Some rest areas have loungers on which you can relax and enjoy nature.

Always nice to see...good places to rest...also in the restaurant. But pay attention to the opening times, otherwise you will find the doors closed

In the shelter you will find information about the chapel moor. Comfortable resting place with a working old handle pump.

An amusement park was located here until 2002. Today the area is characterized by horses and horse trails. It is not a problem to use these trails as a hiker. However, you should be careful because of the many horses.

The Kapellenmoor is an area of around 49 hectares that was created in 1996 as a compensation area for the industrial park on the A31. At this point there is a refuge that was built in 2005 (open at all times) and a lookout tower.
