Today's palace square still gives an idea of the round layout of the former castle complex. Next to the Crooked House shines the impressive Renaissance castle. The castle is currently being renovated. The outer shell is finished, but the inside is still being built vigorously. It will be interesting to see with what concept the castle will be reopened.

The monastery was built in the 13th century as a Cistercian convent for virgins. After an eventful history, it is now owned by the "Klosterverein Rühn e.V.", which lovingly takes care of the facility and has brought life back to the place with a clever concept. Look at everything in peace and let yourself be pampered in the monastery tavern. A Renaissance castle was built in 1556 from a castle of Slavic origin, which also served as the seat of the Schwerin bishops. From 1760, this was partly used by the Friedrichs University of Bützow, which merged with the University of Rostock in 1789 and was thus dissolved in Bützow. Unfortunately, only a little of the ring-like castle complex has survived. Only the three-bay bishop's chapel, in which a local museum has now been set up, gives a hint of the past. In 1812, a central court moved here to investigate serious criminal offenses for all of Mecklenburg. After partial demolition and conversion from 1910 to the 1970s, it was mainly used for official housing, In the later GDR times, the building served as a cultural center, museum, library and music school. The castle has been renovated since 2011. In the course of the restoration, the library and the museum moved into the "crooked house".

The Rühn monastery was founded in 1232 as a Cistercian virgin monastery by the Schwerin bishop Brunward. Before secularization it was the largest landowner in the region. In the course of the Reformation, it was first rededicated as a Lutheran in 1542 and then in 1575 under Duchess Elisabeth to become a Protestant monastery. The monastic use ended in 1756. It then became the administrative seat of the ducal dominion office, after which it became privately owned. During the Weimar period, the building was owned by the AOK Rostock. During National Socialism, the buildings were used for labor service. At the end of World War II, refugees, orphans and the elderly were billeted. From 1950 to 1991 it was a youth work center for "difficult" young people. Until the building was acquired by the Rühn monastery association, it was temporarily owned by the local oil and mustard mill.
