Northernmost point of mainland Germany It's not spectacular, but if you're cycling the North Sea Cycle Route, it's a must-see. Seeing this spot is a must 😉. There's a shelter in the parking lot for shelter in case of rain. There's also information about the dike construction and the Wadden Sea.

The northernmost point of the German mainland is located in the Rickelsbüller Koog, near Rodenäs in the district of Nordfriesland, Schleswig-Holstein. It marks Germany's outermost land border on the North Sea. Access is via the Norddeich–Sieltoft border crossing, which also serves as a reference point for this extreme point. This is not the absolute northernmost point in Germany—that position is occupied by the Ellenbogen peninsula on Sylt, a peninsula north of List that belongs to the island.

Looking over the dike, you can see the Hindenburg Dam to the left and, from time to time, a train passing by. Ahead, the east coast of Sylt with its lighthouse and cliffs. In front, the Wadden Sea is a magnificent sight.

The 500 hectare Rickelsbüller Koog nature reserve stretches between the Sylt dam in the south and the Danish Margrethe Kog in the north. Its northwesternmost point is the northernmost point of the German mainland. The former mudflats and salt marshes were transformed into inland water areas, reed zones and marsh meadows by embankment in the early 1980s. On the hike around the Koog you will encounter numerous species of birds in all seasons: above all many species of ducks, wild geese such as the barnacle goose and greylag goose, but also waders. Of these, lapwings and black-tailed godwits are also breeding birds in the area. The sea eagle is also a frequent visitor. You can take part in the diverse bird life from the dykes and from an observation hut. So don't forget your binoculars!

The wild boar fence that Denmark erected a few years ago is also clearly visible here. It is intended to prevent wild boars from migrating to Denmark and thus bringing swine fever. There used to be nothing here.

The northernmost point on the German mainland is unfortunately not very attractive and unremarkable visually, but it is all the more so historically and geographically, making it an absolute highlight. The northernmost point in Germany is the Ellenbogen on Sylt. The access to the Rickelsbüller Koog and the Margarehe Kog is at the Norddeich-Sieltoft border crossing and is also the northernmost point on the German mainland. For a long time, the westernmost border post of all border crossings between Germany and Denmark was also the most inhospitable. Anyone who worked here felt like they were being transferred. The brutal weather during the winter storms in particular caused problems for the border guards. Today, the small border house and the disused barrier are a reminder of that time. This border crossing is now monitored using scanners and cameras. And mobile patrols now carry out their duties at the former outer dike on an irregular basis. The Rickelsbüller Koog is located on the Germany-Denmark border route and is the starting point of the North Sea-Baltic Sea cycle path. It is not possible to continue driving directly on the dike. Turn right and drive along the border fence then follows a parallel path to Hoyer/DK. Nice information hut about the bird world.

If you can't get up to your elbow on Sylt to visit Germany's northernmost point, you'll find a good alternative here. Very quiet and secluded. The fence to the North Sea is somehow superfluous
