The 35-hectare protected forest – located northeast of you – preserves and develops an old, groundwater-influenced forest site as a near-natural research area, strengthens the natural balance, protects endangered plants and animals, and simultaneously maintains its unique character and scenic beauty. As a valuable section of the vegetation mosaics typical of the Lusatian Lowlands, consisting of pine, spruce-pine, and birch-pedunculate oak forests, as well as a mesotrophic-acidic fen, it is being scientifically studied in the long term without direct human intervention.

The Plessa Power Plant, with its two chimneys, is the only remaining witness to coal production and processing in the Plessa region. Unlike other factories and power plants, the Plessa Power Plant was able to escape demolition. The colossal industrial facilities were preserved in their original form – as they first went into operation in 1927. Today, the power plant is an industrial monument and museum. It was designated a historic monument in 1985. The building, with its harmonious appearance due to its strict symmetry, is considered the oldest lignite-fired power plant in Europe. With this meadow orchard as a community meadow, Kerngehäuse e. V. maintains a public meadow orchard in the nature park, the fruits of which can be harvested for personal use. Even though the path there is not entirely flat, it is still worth it! Numerous fruit trees of different varieties grow on the meadow to suit all tastes. Choose your favorite fruit and bite into it! A small pavilion also invites you to have a picnic and linger.

For structural reasons, tours of the Plessa power plant are no longer possible. However, it remains an impressive historical monument, closely linked to the history of Plessa. The power plant was shut down at the same time as the briquette factory in 1992, after almost 100 years of brown coal processing.

4월 30, 2024, Ernst von Delius Memorial Mural
Only von Delius was a racing driver for Autounion. He grew up in the southern Brandenburg municipality of Plessa, where his father had been the director of the local brown coal works since 1910 and, in this capacity, had the world's first overburden conveyor bridge built according to his plans in 1924, which revolutionized open-cast brown coal mining. A collision with Richard Seaman at the 1937 German Grand Prix on the Nürburgring brought an abrupt end to his promising career on July 25, 1937. While Seaman escaped with minor injuries, Ernst von Delius succumbed to his serious injuries on July 26, 1937 in Bonn. In memory of the von Delius family's achievements, Von-Delius-Straße in Plessa was named after them.
