Until 1989, the almost 1400-kilometer-long inner-German border (also known as the German-German border) prevented residents of the German Democratic Republic from visiting the Federal Republic of Germany or permanently leaving for the West through massive fortifications.[1] This did not include the part of the GDR's border with Berlin, whose western sectors within Berlin were closed off with the Berlin Wall from 1961. The course of the demarcation lines between the western occupation zones and the Soviet occupation zone (SBZ) was determined by the main victorious powers of the Second World War in several conferences and continued in this geographical form after the founding of the two German states in 1949. Seating area with lots of information, right on the cycle path. You have a lovely view from here. Unfortunately the seating area is very old and rotten.

The tower really does have something of a "lost place" feel to it, but the view is fantastic. There's room for a whole busload at the top. A bit strange if you're alone. But if you think back half a century...
