As a result of the strong melting of glaciers at the end of the last ice age (Weichsel), the sea level rose sharply and the western edge of Schleswig-Holstein's geest formed the coastline. In some places, such as the Barlter Kleve (Kleve = cliff, steep coast) near Gudendorf with a drop of 20 m, at the Kleve of Sankt Michaelisdonn (30 m drop) and between Kuden and Burg, the original cliffs formed by the surf are still visible.

The "Kleve" nature reserve, located southeast of St. Michaelisdonn in the Hopen district of Dithmarschen, has existed as such since November 8, 1962. Parts of the "Hoper or Donner Kleve" were bought by a nature conservation association as early as 1914, and then placed under the protection ordinance under the Reich Nature Conservation Act in 1938. At 11.9 hectares, it is certainly one of the smallest nature reserves in Schleswig-Holstein, but due to its animal and plant populations, it is a real treasure trove.

7월 22, 2024, Gedenkstätte Gudendorf
The Gudendorf Memorial is located in the municipality of Gudendorf in the district of Dithmarschen, Schleswig-Holstein, and commemorates the fate of Soviet prisoners of war during the Second World War. Originally, a prisoner of war camp was built in 1941, which later also housed a medical station for Soviet prisoners. Many of the prisoners died due to the poor conditions and diseases. After the war, in 1961, the remains of 248 Soviet prisoners of war and forced laborers were reburied at the memorial. The memorial was designed by the landscape gardener Hans-Erik Brodersen and the sculptor Siegfried Assmann and is now a place of remembrance and warning. The “Flowers for Gudendorf” initiative, founded in 1983, organizes memorial events every year around May 8th to commemorate the victims of the Nazi regime and to set an example for peace and international understanding. In addition to information boards, the memorial also offers guided tours and workshops for visitors. The memorial is partially barrier-free and freely accessible. It is located at the end of Vierthstraße in Gudendorf and is easily accessible by car and public transport.

4월 13, 2023, Edda Windmill (Hoper Mühle)
HISTOUR point SM7 Landmark of the municipality of St. Michaelisdonn The "Edda" mill deserves a special mention among the mills, not only because of its structural beauty (thatched roof, wooden paneling of the lower part), but also because of its wonderful location above the Geestrand. Its predecessor, a post mill made of beech wood, is said to have been moved here in 1666 to replace a neighboring water mill that had to be shut down due to a lack of water. When the famous theologian and son of a miller, Claus Harms, married the daughter of Hoper Müller in 1806, the wings of the Bockmühle were in scissors. When the old building was demolished in 1842, a beam with the inscription “A. D. 1666 May 8” Used in the new Bergholländer, which was first called “Immanuel”. Mill builder Paul Jacobs carried out the new building and since 1886 the mill has had blind wings. Since 1912 it has been driven by a wind rose.

Draisinenbahn St. Michaelisdonn - Marne Since 2004, the St. Michaelisdonn - Marne handcar has been a new attraction in the "Südermarsch" holiday region between the mouth of the Elbe, the Kiel Canal and the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park. From May to October not only those interested in railways, fans of handcars and nature lovers can experience the old marsh railway line between St.Michaelisdonn and Marne. On nine kilometers of track, visitors roll through the landscape on a bicycle handcar, past marsh pastures and wind turbines typical of the west coast. A unique feature is that the handcars can be used with so-called "plug-in sails" for travel downwind; an experience without exertion when the fresh sea breeze blows. From the endpoints in St. Michaelisdonn and Marne, draisine guests can visit the sights and unique natural landscapes in the area by bicycle, which can be hired at the draisine stations. Before the draisine railway could go into operation in 2004, a few preparations had to be made. The former Marschenbahn route St. Michaelisdonn - Marne was reconditioned. This lay dormant for many years. On December 15, 1884, the railway line from St. Michaelisdonn to Marne and Friedrichskoog was opened. At that time, mainly freight trains with sugar beets to the St. Michaelisdonn sugar factory drove on the tracks. A passenger service followed later. This was discontinued again in the 1960s, and years later freight traffic as well. Source: https://www.st-michaelisdonn.de/marschenbahn-draisine

Kleve is a nature reserve in the Schleswig-Holstein municipality of Sankt Michaelisdonn in the Dithmarschen district. The nature reserve was designated in late 1962 (date of ordinance: November 8, 1962) and replaces the nature reserve of the same name that was designated in late 1938.[1] The largest part of the nature reserve is part of the 222-hectare FFH area "Klev- und Donnlandschaft bei St. Michaelisdonn". The district of Dithmarschen is responsible for the lower nature conservation authority. The nature reserve is managed by the Department of Culture and General - District Forests of the district of Dithmarschen. The nature reserve is north of Brunsbüttel, a few hundred meters south-east of Sankt Michaelisdonn. It protects a slope up to 30 meters high on the border between Geest and Marsch. The slope is a historical cliff of the former North Sea coast. It extends along an old moraine from the Saale Ice Age. Spring water emerges from this in several places. The Geest slope is predominantly forested with coppice and mixed oak forests.[5] In the northern part of the protected area, through which the St. Michaelisdonn-Friedrichskoog railway runs, there is also a grassland area. In the southern area of the nature reserve, heath grows on tree-free areas. Sometimes dry grass can also be found here. The heath must be grazed for maintenance. The removal of the grass and heath sods, known as plagging, must also be continued to rejuvenate the heath. Up to 300 species of insects live on the heathland, including bumblebees, wild bees, wasps such as digger and spider wasps, hoverflies, grasshoppers and ground beetles. Numerous reptiles also occur here, e.g. B. slow worm, smooth snake, grass snake, adder as well as sand and wood lizard. Furthermore, the nature reserve offers a habitat for hares and wild rabbits as well as various species of marten. The nature reserve is accessible at the edges by hiking trails. On the Bismarck stone in the north, a boulder that was found during the widening of the Kiel Canal from 1907 to 1914 and erected here in 1915, and on the Spiekerberg in the south, there are viewpoints of the Elbmarsch. The Gudendorf memorial (Dithmarschen district, Schleswig-Holstein) is intended to commemorate Soviet prisoners of war and forced laborers who died in a camp here during World War II. The memorial lies within the Klev landscape protection area from Windbergen to St. Michaelisdonn. Soviet prisoners of war arrived in Schleswig-Holstein in a deplorable condition, being inadequately fed. Shortly after Nazi Germany attacked the Soviet Union in 1941, a prison camp for Soviet prisoners of war was established in Gudendorf. Barracks in which the Soviet prisoners of war were housed stood on an area of around one hectare on what is now Schulstrasse. The camp belonged to the STALAG (main camp) XA Schleswig. In addition, barracks were erected on the road to St. Michaelisdonn near Hindorf to serve as an "epidemic precinct". Part of the site also served as a military training camp. In April 1944, the Stalag X Az "extended infirmary" for sick Soviet prisoners of war who were unable to work and had been in Kaltenkirchen-Heidkaten since 1941 was relocated to Gudendorf in the area of what is now Schulstraße. Little is known about the exact conditions under which the prisoners had to live and work. Gerhard Hoch had characterized the previous Heidkaten camp as a death camp[1]. According to recent research, this can no longer be maintained[2]. According to estimates from the 1950s, 3,000 Soviet prisoners of war died in Gudendorf in 1944 and 1945.[3] The historian Martin Gietzelt, on the other hand, was able to identify 46 deceased after evaluating the personnel cards; he expects "less than a hundred dead". After the end of the war, the site served as a detention center for young people from the eastern German territories, as a reserve hospital and as a civilian facility for the Süderdithmarschen district hospital before the first memorial was set up in 1946. The Bismarckstein and the view of the marsh The Bismarckstein - this remarkable boulder probably came to the Dithmarscher Geest during the penultimate ice age 200,000 years ago. During the widening of the Kiel Canal between 1907 and 1914, the stone came to light with a length of 3.50 meters, a diameter of 2 meters and a weight of 25 tons. Originally, foundation material was to be created by blasting the stone. But all attempts failed. Today you can still see the drill holes for the explosive charges. Donner canal workers suggested erecting the stone in honor of the "Iron Chancellor Otto von Bismarck" (1815-1898; Chancellor of the German Reich from 1871 to 1890) on the Klev near St. Michaelisdonn. In 1915 - the hundredth year Bismarck was born - the colossus was transported by barge to Hochdonn and from there by train to Hoper Klev. The last 200 meters turned out to be difficult. The stone was pulled centimeter by centimeter up the slope on roped planks and erected using a hand winch. The design was completed with further small boulders and a planting. After much had been destroyed by the hands of the wicked, it was redesigned in 1933. After renewed devastation in 1977, a concrete foundation was made and the lower part of the stone laid in the ground. Since then no wicked hand has touched him. The Donner Heimat- und Mühlenverein e.V. took over the care of the Bismarck stone in 2002. All visitors are called upon to help keep this place of remembrance and natural beauty of their homeland in good condition. Source: https://www.st-michaelisdonn.de/9-st-michaelisdonn/78-bismarckstein
