Schenkenau was first mentioned in 1286 as the ancestral seat of the von Rotenhan family. The medieval fortress on the Erfurt-Nuremberg trade route was destroyed except for the ground floor during the Peasants' War of 1525, but was subsequently rebuilt as a Ganerbenburg (Ganerbenburg). After 1437, the castle changed hands several times. Since 1960, Schenkenau has been owned by the Treiber family, who began generating electricity in 1961 and offered farm holidays since 1973. https://die-schenkenau.de/

The Gereuther Tannen is a sunken landscape park that was created in 1797 by the lord of the Gereuther castle, Philipp Ignatius Karl Reichsfreiherr von Greiffenklau. Today, nature has largely reclaimed the park.

The "Gereuther Tannen" landscape park was created in 1797 in the spirit of classicism and early romanticism. It was intended to reflect an "ideal nature" and also be "a human realm". The commissioner was Philip Ignatius Carl Reichsfreiherr von Greiffenclau, who lived in the castle of Gereuth. The park was also visited several times by the poet Friedrich Rückert. According to records, there was a small inn made of reeds and straw, a coffee house made of spruce trunks, a fireplace with a cellar "all around with many seats". The place described is easy to locate: the seats mentioned are the round sandstone blocks known today as "Rückersteine", and the cellar mentioned has also been preserved. The Rückert monument, erected in 1912, also stands here.

This castle ruin is hidden in the forest between Buch and Wüstenwelsberg. Only hewn rocks and the remains of walls remain of the castle, which was already a ruin in the 13th century.

The baroque Gereuth Castle is the centre of the Untermerzbach district of Gereuth. Numerous events take place in the baroque castle, and there is also a restaurant and guest rooms. The old castle is in a deep sleep on the opposite side of the street. A visit is possible by appointment.
