It is a listed building. The hall church consists of a neo-Gothic nave, a recessed choir closed on three sides in the west and a Julius Echter tower in the east, which was built around 1600 and covered with an eight-sided slate-covered roof. The church was renovated in 1979. The painting from around 1900 was restored. The organ, built in 1850, with 10 registers, a manual and a pedal, was restored in 1988 by the organ builder Horst Hoffmann.

Simply planting a tree is not enough. The area and the tree need constant care. Here, the gardening association in Schonungen takes care of the trees and a farmer mows the area. This is not a matter of course, since there is no sensible use for the grass clippings due to the decline in animal husbandry.
