The High Shore stretches over 3.2 km from the Wustrow pier to the Ahrenshoop border path on the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula. The High Shore is a terminal moraine, formed by the Scandinavian ice sheet more than 10,000 years ago and shaped by the ocean surf. This continues to cause constant change in what is known as the active cliff. The annual coastal erosion can reach up to five meters. Nesting sand martins can be observed below the cliff in the high, steep escarpment. The High Shore is ideal for hiking on foot or by bike, and on a clear day, you can even see the Danish mainland from here. The narrow footpath directly along the cliff offers a wide variety of scenery. It leads through small wooded areas, past sea buckthorn bushes and dog roses, the typical vegetation of the area. The border path marks the historic border between Mecklenburg and (Western) Pomerania. Ahrenshoop belonged to Western Pomerania, while the districts of Althagen and Niehagen belonged to Mecklenburg.

A walking tour takes you to 10 selected locations where esteemed artists once found motifs for their Ahrenshoop paintings. Closed on the Hohe Ufer. A key section of the circular trail, which led up a steel staircase, is currently closed.

A thatched roof is a traditional type of roofing. Dried reeds, called thatch, are used for this purpose. The craft of thatching was submitted by the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage and confirmed as such in 2014. Thatch was one of the first roofing materials used by settled humans. The first documented thatched roofs date back to 4000 BC. Thatched roofs should have a pitch of over 45 degrees to allow water droplets to slide from stalk to stalk. Thatched roofs have a large roof overhang because they lack gutters. Typically, a roof needs to be replaced after 30 to 50 years at the latest.

I return to the Darß every six years and find the high shore changed every time. The fact that there are no longer any summer steps down to the beach and that all the bunker facilities are now located in the Baltic Sea waters is one thing. Another is the fact that the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has only registered this stretch of beach as a Natura 2000 site with Brussels, which eliminates any coastal protection and sacrifices meter after meter of high shore to the sea. Coastal protection is being practiced in Wustrow, Ahrenshoop, and Prerow – but not on the high shore! But that apparently has nothing to do with green ideology...
