Following the Finsterberggründchen, you'll come across a pleasant rest stop at a crossroads. Located on a small meadow, you can also enjoy the view, continue along the circular route, or, for example, follow the trail up to reach the summit of Finsterberg. However, the trail is very challenging due to numerous washouts.

Schmiedefeld am Rennsteig is a state-recognized health resort in the heart of the Thuringian Forest, directly within the Vessertal Biosphere Reserve. The town boasts a long history dating back to 1406 and was once an important center of ore mining. Today, the town is an ideal starting point for hikes, especially along the famous Rennsteig trail.

A scenic path between the Kreuzwege and Kalte Herberge car parks. The view extends over the length of the trail from the Großer Finsterberg, via the Schmücke weather station, Schneekopf, Beerberg, Großer Hermannsberg, Ruppberg, Dolmar to the Ringberghaus near Suhl. The Rhönberge can be seen in the background.
