The listed Church of St. John Nepomuk is a branch church of the Roman Catholic parish of St. John in Altenberge, Steinfurt district, and is located in the center of the Hansell district, which belongs to the municipality of Altenberge. The parish church is dedicated to St. John the Baptist. The construction of a chapel was initiated in the mid-18th century by the residents of the Hansell farming community so that they would not have to make the arduous journey to the parish church in Altenberge on Sundays and holidays. After the construction was completed, this journey was only necessary for baptisms and similar ceremonies. The chapel was donated by Canon Jodocus Franciscus Homeier and his sister Johanna Catharina, who owned a farm in Hansell. In 1921, it was elevated to a parish, and in 2009, the parishes merged, so that St. John Nepomuk now belongs once again to the mother parish of St. John the Baptist.

In 2006, the municipality of Altenberge, together with the Altenberge Local History Society and the BUND Altenberge local chapter, offered the citizens of Altenberge the tradition of planting a tree to mark a personal event—be it a wedding, birth, milestone birthday, exam, or other occasion. Within just a few years, this "Jubelwiese" (Jubilation Meadow) was created.
