🏰History and Function The lake was created from 1935 onwards by the intensive extraction of sand and gravel. The hopper towers were formerly used to wash and sort the extracted gravel and to temporarily store it for transport by truck or railcar. Since industrial use ended in 2005 and the lake was transformed into a recreational area as part of the Regionale 2004 project, the hoppers have found a new purpose.

🌊 Lake Offlum in Neuenkirchen (near Steinfurt) is known for its distinctive red funnel-shaped towers, often referred to as gravel dumping hoppers. These structures are the lake's prominent landmark and a direct testament to its industrial past.

🔔 The "Klöcksken von Offlum" is a charming historical stop on the circular hiking trail around Lake Offlum in Neuenkirchen. However, it is not a classic monastery complex with preserved buildings, but rather a memorial site steeped in local history.

🌅 The funnel-shaped viewing platform at Offlumer See in Neuenkirchen (also known as the "Funnel Towers") is a striking landmark of the region and offers one of the most beautiful views in Münsterland. The three bright red funnel towers are a reminder of the lake's industrial past as a sand and gravel extraction area. Where the wet material was once drained, they now serve as spectacular viewpoints right on the lakeside promenade.
