Beautiful rest area near Klingenbach

The Pauline Monastery in Baumgarten, also known as the "Desolate Monastery," was founded in 1475 and is one of the region's most important cultural monuments. The late Gothic complex with Baroque furnishings once served as a hermit monastery and is now a place of Marian veneration, especially for Burgenland's Croats. [burgenland.info]

The monastery complex, founded in 1475 by Ulrich I for the Pauline Order, an order still widely represented in Europe today, was marked by constant disputes over ownership throughout its eventful history. The situation only calmed down after an agreement with the Esterházy family in 1667. Between 1743 and 1762, the present appearance was created, taking into account the medieval ruins and reduced structure. In 1782, the monastery was dissolved as part of the Josephine monastic reform. Uninhabited since 1836, the monastery subsequently underwent only makeshift repairs; plans to reestablish an order ultimately failed due to adverse circumstances. A general renovation was not carried out until 1925, during which a Lourdes grotto was built in the former refectory. Between 1982 and 1986, the very ruined monastery underwent another complete restoration.

The monastery complex, popularly known as the "Odes Monastery" or "Hermitage", is atmospherically situated outside of the village in an open area.

Kloster von Baumgarten- Paulinerkloster or "desolate monastery" Baumgarten Monastery, also known as the Hermitage, is 500 meters west of the village. It was donated to the Pauline Order by Ulrich von Grafenegg in 1475. In 1493 fire raged in the Hermitage. The monastery was abandoned for 250 years. In 1743 it was resettled by hermit monks and used as a hermit's hermitage until 1836. From then until today, the monastery church has been a pilgrimage church. The renovation of the Gothic building was completed in 1986 and is one of the most important church buildings in the Rosalia-Neufelder Seenplatte region.
