The Nepomuk Chapel in Wels is a venerable example of Baroque architecture and a significant piece of cultural heritage, honoring Saint John of Nepomuk. This saint, venerated as the patron saint of log drivers, reminds us of the deep-rooted tradition of timber transport on the Traun River, which was of great importance to the region. Erected in 1732 by the log drivers' guild, the chapel stands on the south side of the building at Traungasse 12, the former site of the Traun Gate. We were here briefly on a business trip, and it's a nice way to enjoy the views in all directions around Wels. The mountains and the fantastic panorama are also beautiful. Open year-round, with many steps leading up to the top, and there's also a guest book. Everything's free, and there's no waiting time. Worth a quick stop.

A beautiful zoo in the heart of the city. Many different animals, all of which are easy to observe. There's also a large children's playground and a cozy snack bar with normal prices. Everything is wheelchair accessible. Admission is free, and parking is available. Perfect for a relaxing afternoon.

Thalheim Air Raid Shelter near Wels In the Reinberg valley near Thalheim near Wels, tunnels were built very late to serve as air raid shelters for Wels businesses and the local population. Documented construction work only began in January 1945. Construction of the first tunnel began on January 15, 1945, by the company Ferro-Betonit-Werke AG. Work on the second began on January 23, and excavation of the third began on February 15. There are no records of the start of construction for the other tunnels. With the exception of one, all tunnels are now either closed, walled up, or collapsed after a few meters. Wels was the target of Allied air raids, primarily because of the airbase and the aircraft and metal structures, but also because of the train station and marshalling yard. The first air raid hit the city on May 30, 1944, claiming the lives of many residents.
