Reißinsel is a designated nature reserve and is closed every year from March through June to allow the birds living there to raise their young undisturbed. The northern part of Reißinsel is protected as a "bannwald" (protected forest). This area is not used for forestry purposes in any way. To the south lies a "Schonwald" (conserved forest), where forestry management is specifically geared towards protecting the forest. This memorial below the Kalmit summit commemorates the members of the Maikammer-Alsterweiler branch of the Palatinate Forest Association who fell in both World Wars. Erected in 1933, it bears the names of the victims of the First World War on a very large stone (with an eagle); later, a smaller stone was added with the names of those who fell in the Second World War.
