Isel Bridge, located near Setmurthy in the northern Lake District, is an elegant Grade II-listed bridge that spans the River Derwent. Built in 1812 to replace an older bridge dating from 1691, it consists of three segmental arches and two piers of calciferous and pink sandstone, with a solid parapet and saddleback covering. The bridge is situated in a conservation area and is a popular passage for walkers and cyclists, including as part of the Allerdale Ramble and routes to Watch Hill and Setmurthy Common. Its location offers beautiful views of the surrounding hills and valleys, and it's a peaceful place to stop when touring the western Lake District.

There is a bumpy, small rock boulder track for maybe a couple of miles at this location. The bumps make the bike vibrate and slow motion down, your arms get well exercised riding through this area

Crossing over the Ouse Bridge, the water rushes from the Derwent River to the west into Bassenthwaite to the east. The location of Bassenthwaite in the quieter northern end of the national park can make this a more tranquil lake to visit.

A beautiful spot for a bite to eat although crossing a falling tree is necessary!

Nice easy hill to do. I parked in Cockermouth and did the hike to the top of Watch Hill and back in 1.5 hours.

From this delightful little bridge and its surroundings at the northern end of Bassenthwaite is a wonderful view of the North and North Western Lakeland Fells. Bassenthwaite's location in the north of the national park makes it quieter than the likes of Ullswater, Derwent Water and Windermere. However, it is technically the only lake in the Lake District, the others being meres and waters.

The knoll in front of the point where these two boundaries meet is the summit of Setmurthy Common, a fell featured in Alfred Wainwright's Outlying Fells of Lakeland book. It's easily hiked from Cockermouth together with Watch Hill. Enter the woodland to a symphony of bird song.

The views north on the edge of the woodland are of quintessential English countryside. Lush green farmers fields and rolling hills, with birdsong as the perfect accompaniment. A wonderful place to find a bit of peace, quiet and to reconnect with nature.

The trails through this woodland are wide and easy to follow. Right on the edge of Cockermouth, they make a great place for an evening or weekend stroll
