This section of the Appalachian Trail from Sam's Gap to Hogback Ridge Shelter offers a taste of the iconic long-distance path without committing to an all-day trek. You'll navigate the "trademark roller coaster up-and-downs" of the AT, winding through shaded treelines and past ancient oak trees, with the promise of expansive long-range views. Visiting in early spring can enhance the experience, as leafless trees provide even more open views of the surrounding landscape.

The trail follows the ridgeline of Peter Cove Mountain, often straddling the North Carolina/Tennessee state line, and you might even spot the Moye Family Monument near Sam's Gap, which marks a land donation.

The Martin's Creek Falls trail in Erwin, Tennessee, offers a delightful, easy hike through the serene Cherokee National Forest, culminating in a beautiful 20-foot cascading waterfall. You'll start on a wide, old forest road, gradually ascending through rhododendron-lined paths that burst with wildflowers in the spring. The final approach to the falls narrows and descends, leading you to a tranquil pool at the base, making for a picturesque and peaceful experience.

This 0.9-mile (1.5 km) route involves 360 feet (110 metres) of elevation gain and takes approximately 28 minutes to complete, making it an excellent choice for a quick, family-friendly adventure. The falls are most impressive after a good rain, offering a more dramatic display.

What truly sets this trail apart is its quiet, less-trafficked atmosphere, providing a genuine escape into nature without the crowds. Step into a unique high-elevation ecosystem on the Unaka Mountain via Appalachian Trail. This easy 1.1-mile (1.7 km) hike takes you through changing forest types, culminating in the dense, mysterious 'Emerald Forest' of red spruce at the summit of Unaka Mountain. Sunlight rarely penetrates the thick canopy here, creating an otherworldly atmosphere that feels far removed from the everyday. It's a short, impactful journey perfect for experiencing a distinct natural feature.

Planning your visit for this 39-minute hike means preparing for a steady uphill climb of 649 feet (198 metres) over a relatively short distance. While rated easy, the elevation gain is noticeable. The trail is generally well-maintained, but always check for seasonal conditions, especially road access, as higher elevations can be prone to closures. Arriving earlier in the day can help ensure a quieter experience.

Unaka Mountain is part of the larger Appalachian and Blue Ridge mountain systems, with its name derived from a Cherokee word meaning 'white,' possibly referring to the American chestnut trees that once covered its slopes. This trail offers a glimpse into the diverse ecology of the region, showcasing how forest types dramatically shift with elevation, making it a notable natural feature even without expansive summit views.

Lower Higgins Creek Falls

The Lower Higgins Creek Falls Trail offers a delightful journey through the Cherokee National Forest, tracing an old logging road alongside the "glorious tumbling" Lower Higgins Creek. You'll encounter numerous small cascades and creek crossings before reaching the main event: a stunning 100-foot waterfall. This easy 0.7-mile (1.2 km) hike, with 430 feet (131 metres) of elevation gain, can be completed in about 26 minutes, making it a quick but memorable outing.

To make the most of your trip, consider visiting in spring or after a recent rain, when the creek and falls are at their most vibrant. While the initial sections are gentle, the descent to the base of the falls is notably steep and can be slippery, so bringing hiking poles is a smart move for stability. The trail is generally well-maintained, but the final approach to the waterfall's base is a rugged "social trail."

Beyond the main 100-foot Lower Higgins Creek Falls, the area boasts several smaller waterfalls upstream for those eager to explore further. Thanks to the Rocky Fork acquisition, this pristine natural area is now publicly accessible, offering a wild and unspoiled experience free from excessive crowds or litter. It's a fantastic spot to witness the dynamic power of nature, especially when the water is flowing strong.

Sam's Gap is a popular parking area on the Appalachian Trail just outside of the town of Flag Pond, Tennessee. The parking area is situated below an interstate bridge so this area can get a bit noisy at times, but the Appalachian Trail stretches two different directions out of the parking lot and offers a quick escape from the interstate noise.

There is a natural viewing 'window' between the trees from a rock jutting out from the mountain. You can access this viewing area by following a short spur trail (marked with blue blazes) from the main Appalachian Trail for a few hundred feet. The view from High Rock is most expansive in the winter and late fall when the leaves on the trees have mostly fallen.

The Hogback Ridge Shelter is one of the many maintained sleeping shelters on the Appalachian Trail. There is a privy near the shelter and a water source only a few hundred feet away. This is an excellent picnic site or overnight camping spot. Please follow LNT practices, and don't attract animals to the shelter area by leaving food and trash behind.

Buffalo Mountain Park is home to a variety of different trails and visitors. It can be agreed, though, that the highlight of the park is the highpoint of Buffalo Mountain. Regardless of what trail you take, follow signs towards "Tip Top" to find your way to the top of this spectacular mountain top with views of Johnson City in one direction and the mountains of Cherokee National Forest in the other.
