A.D. as a defense stronghold near the borders of the Duchy of Milan, it became a noble residence only in 1448 when the brothers Francesco and Guido Visconti, leaving the city of Milan, settled in Somma Lombardo. In 1473, due to some disagreements, the brothers decided to divide the ownership of the residence and the village of Somma, effectively marking the legal division until 1950, the year in which the Marquis Alberto Visconti of San Vito reunited the entire property. The last pupil of the family was Gabrio Visconti di San Vito who, by will, left the ownership of the castle to the Visconti di San Vito Foundation in 1997, which today deals with the maintenance and perpetuation of the memory of the castle.
