The Place de l'Hôtel-de-Ville, designed by Perret, is one of the largest in Europe. The harmonious whole consists of three-storey buildings with roof terraces, alternating with 10-storey tower blocks. The square is decorated with ponds, fountains and galleries covered with yew arches and hornbeams. At the center is a memorial: the "two wounded birds" by the sculptor Adam symbolize the deportations and the resistance. A tower of rough concrete rises above the austere town hall.

The Parisian architect Jules Bourdais built the building in the neo-Greek style, taking inspiration from the west facade of the Palais de Justice in Paris. Inaugurated in 1876, it allowed Justice to leave the building on the Place du Vieux-marché which became the Museum in 1881. The two stone lions on either side of the staircase were replaced after the Second World War by the statues of Bernardin de Saint-Pierre and Casimir Delavigne.
