Charcoal burning is an ancient craft, now almost extinct, but in the past it was a crucial factor in the industrialization of entire regions: The blast furnaces of the iron and steel industry, for example, relied on charcoal to reach the operating temperature necessary for smelting ore. As a consequence, however, entire regions were once completely deforested by charcoal burning, and it is only thanks to later reforestation efforts that forests have regrown and nature can be seen again.

Delicious food and friendly service in a great hut atmosphere! Ideal starting or ending point for hikes on the Montabaurer Höhe with a large parking lot.

It can often be very stormy and rainy up here. The shelter is very welcome.
