8월 26, 2025, Dorneck Castle Ruins
In 1997, the cantonal government decided to undertake the necessary restoration and preservation measures at the castle complex to preserve its historic features. After two years of renovation work, the Dorneck ruins are once again open to visitors. The view from the tower over Basel and Dornach is breathtaking.

The Goetheaneum in Dornach is a monumental, listed building made of exposed concrete, designed by Rudolf Steiner, the founder of anthroposophy. It serves as the headquarters and conference venue of the General Anthroposophical Society and the School of Spiritual Science, as well as a festival hall. The view from the Dornach hill on which it stands is fantastic.

4월 9, 2025, Burg Rotberg
Rotberg Castle is located on the recently signposted Castle Magic Route 114 and is worth every visit, especially for an overnight stay. Although the castle is a Swiss youth hostel, it can also be rented privately: for weddings, anniversaries, etc. The entire castle is also available with or without catering. It is closed during the winter months. The shared rooms have been recently renovated. For only two or a few people, it is best to contact the castle directly; the tower room for two, for example, is not listed online.

3월 16, 2025, Goetheanum
Starting with the First Goetheanum as a double-domed structure, a series of residential and functional buildings were built between 1914 and 1924. They derived their form from their respective functions and location relative to the main building. Through these ancillary buildings, Rudolf Steiner architecturally expressed the idea of metamorphosis. Just as the diversity of nature develops from a primal motif, the ancillary buildings emerged from the First Goetheanum and form an organic connection. They can therefore be understood as a further development of the double-domed main building.

The Goetheanum is the headquarters of the Anthroposophical Society and was built between 1925 and 1928. The first building was destroyed by arson, then this striking exposed concrete building was built. It is now a listed building, as are several buildings in the area. An impressive place.

12월 28, 2024, Kloster Mariastein
The Mariastein monastery is considered the second most important pilgrimage site in Switzerland after Einsiedeln. Its origins go back to a legend in which a little boy fell over a high rock face and was then found unharmed by his mother. After he told his father that he had been caught by a woman, the father was sure that it was the Virgin Mary. He had a chapel built in a cave in her honor. The monastery complex can be visited daily, but services are held regularly. More information can be found here: https://www.kloster-mariastein.ch/informationen/agenda/

This 13th century castle, perched on the cliffs overlooking Mariastein, seems to come straight out of a fairytale. The building houses a youth hostel. It's a wonderful place to stay just 15 kilometers from the town of Basel.

It is impressive that the Goetheanum and its accompanying buildings, the "Glass House" and the "Heating House", were built in 1924, despite their spectacularly modern exteriors. The Goetheanum has a cafeteria and a garden terrace in the summer. The interior is partly open to the public. There are four themed trails around the Goetheanum that bring visitors closer to the unique architecture of its spiritual founding father, Rudolf Steiner.

Mariastein Abbey is, after Einsiedeln, the second most important place of pilgrimage in Switzerland. It is known for its chapel dedicated to Mary, located in the Grotto, as well as its beautiful Gothic architecture and works of art.

Although no longer in the original: the restoration for the sake of young people was a great thing!

3월 19, 2023, Challpass
The Challpass is an unspectacular curve with a parking lot or postbus turning point on a busy main road. Nevertheless far and wide one of the few possibilities to cross the blue chain in north-south direction or vice versa.

a quiet and beautiful variant for the ride on the Gempen. Quiet because motorized traffic is closed (at least the lower part) and because it is not up the well-known and notorious main street of Dornach. Ideal in summer because the actual ascent is in the forest and after the ascent to the Schönmatt restaurant you can relax on the intermediate plateau before the last few meters up to Gempen. And nice because it goes up through a beautiful deciduous forest and then the cherry trees line the path at the top.

steep, yes, but if you are looking for high-percentage gradients, you will not find them here. a more "normal" gradient and relatively even. From my own experience, it can also be done with a classic steel racer with 42/25.

Ruine Dorneck is a partially preserved ruin, but it offers a breathtaking view over Basel and the surrounding communities.

An old ruin that is still partially preserved, from where you have a breathtaking view over Basel and part of Basel-Landschaft.
