The castle dates back to the 13th century, has changed hands several times and has been abandoned and uninhabitable since 1645. It fell into disrepair and was often used as a quarry.

When work began to rebuild the castle in the autumn of 1933, it was nothing more than a meager and dilapidated ruin. Generous donations provided the financial means to rebuild it in 1934 and 1935 using plans by the castle builder Eugen Probst through a voluntary work service of unemployed young people.

On November 27, 1935, the castle was handed over to Swiss youth as a youth castle and youth hostel.

Castle researcher Werner Meyer criticizes the fantasy product of the "castle architect" of 1934/35 and states: "The excavation work carried out without scientific supervision and the pseudo-historical restoration have devastated the archaeological findings and obscured the original wall structure."
