Charles de Gaulle, the former president of the Republic and leader of Free France, had a special bond with Calais. This had a sentimental background, for Yvonne Vendroux, later Madame Charles de Gaulle (affectionately called "Aunt Yvonne" by the French), originally came from the port city in the Hauts-de-France region.

Beautiful city center

Located 15 kilometers from Calais, this small town boasts a rich historical heritage. It was not far from here that Francis I and Henry VIII met for the "Interview at the Field of the Cloth of Gold." In 1785, its national forest also served as the landing site for the first flight over the sea. Don't miss the Clock Tower in its center.

Everyone knows Calais as a ferry port to England, but I would never have guessed that Calais is actually an incredibly diverse city. Calais surprises with modern street art, as well as pretty buildings and an old citadel. The beach is also worth a visit.

Statue (made by Elisabeth Cibot) shows Charles de Gaulle, who you can recognize unmistakably as a statesman in his later photos, and his beloved Yvonne Vendroux. The couple were married for almost 50 years.

The town hall is certainly the pearl of this city. I have rarely seen such a beautiful town hall. If you are in Calais, you should take a look at it.
