We were there in mid-October, and it got quite crowded in St. Bartolomä around lunchtime. I imagine it's even busier in the summer months. But perhaps the flow of visitors is better spread out then, because the boats also travel to Salet.

The Steinernes Meer (Steinernes Meer) is a karst, inhospitable, and almost waterless plateau approximately 13 kilometers long and five kilometers wide. It lies between the Watzmann massif, Königssee, Hagengebirge, Hochkönigstock, and Hochkalter massif, and resembles a sea turned to stone with rolling, stony waves. Many paths lead through the Steinernes Meer, and many huts invite you to rest and spend the night – an ideal area for multi-day hut tours.
