At the foot of the castle hill lies the small medieval town of Werdenberg, which has a picturesque market square with arbors. Remains of the archway still indicate the former main entrance. A staircase leads up to the castle through the vineyards. On the valley side, Werdenberg nestles against the small Werdenberg Lake. The defensive city wall once formed the lake front. Today, the remains of the wall serve as an impressive base on which the pretty wooden houses dating from the 15th to 17th centuries were built.
