A beautiful path around the castle

The Path of Virtue: At the instigation of Carl Alexander of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach, the "Wartburg innovator" in the second half of the 19th century, the Path of Virtue was built along the south and west sides of the outer walls. It was considered the Grand Duke's favorite path, his private domain, from which he enjoyed the magnificent view of the Thuringian forests rich in wildlife. The view sweeps over the Wartburg Forest Park, from the Inselsberg to the Hohen Meißner, from the Hohe Sonne to the Clausberg Manor House. Along the path, you stroll past the towering walls and buildings of the Wartburg. Those who do not enter the interior of the Wartburg via the stairs near the south tower can walk around the southern defensive wall and reach the medieval palace at the end. In 1889, Friedrich Eduard von Eichel-Streiber had a castle-like villa built on the ridge by the architects Ludwig Nehrer and Aage von Kauffmann. Until 2008, the villa was the seat of the regional church office of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Thuringia.
