Fritz Cremer's famous Buchenwald sculpture is part of the Buchenwald Memorial, the largest and most important concentration camp memorial in Germany. Created between 1954 and 1958, the group of figures was restored between 2002 and 2005. The expressive group comprises eleven larger-than-life bronze figures symbolizing struggle and sacrifice, victory and the prisoners' oath. Behind the group of monuments, the 50-meter-high bell tower rises majestically, visible far into the distance.

Since the first palace and park complexes were built at the beginning of the 18th century, Ettersburg was a popular hunting and summer residence for the ducal family of Saxony-Weimar and Eisenach. Anna Amalia gathered a literary and artistic circle around her here. The extensive landscape park with its gardens and the "Pückler-Schlag" is a gem of garden art.

On the manifestation square in front of the bell tower stands the group of figures created by Fritz Cremer, mounted on a red stone base. The bronze sculpture - it is the largest in Germany - is dedicated to the victorious resistance struggle in the camp and shows the “self-liberation” of the prisoners under the leadership of the communists.

East of Stotternheim stands the Luther Stone. On July 2, 1505, Martin Luther was walking back to Erfurt from his parents' home in Mansfeld when he was caught in such a violent thunderstorm near Stotternheim that he feared for his life. Completely overwhelmed and terrified, he is said to have cried out: "Help me, St. Anne, I will become a monk!" Today, this spot near Lake Stotternheim is considered the turning point of the Reformation. Just 15 days after this event, on July 17, 1505, Martin Luther entered the Augustinian monastery in Erfurt. A year later, he took his monastic vows. In 1917, to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the Reformation, a citizen of Erfurt donated a memorial stone made of Swedish granite, which was erected at the location, according to historical accounts, most likely where the lightning struck, and is situated in a small park. 🦊

Buchenwald was the only concentration camp that bore this inscription. It was designed by the Bauhaus architect Franz Ehrlich, who was himself imprisoned in Buchenwald until 1943, on the orders of the National Socialists.

The bronze sculpture refers to the many victims of the Buchenwald concentration camp up to 1945. The victims of the Soviet special camp No. 2, which was located on the Ettersberg between 1945 and 1950, played no role at that time. The political and art-political disputes surrounding Fritz Cremer's group of figures prevented the monument from being completed quickly. Between 1952 and 1954 the artist presented three draft versions of the sculpture. In the course of the work he designed a total of 42 individual figures. https://www.monumente-online.de/de/sendungen/2014/3/politiks-figurentheater.php
