The bronze sculpture refers to the many victims of the Buchenwald concentration camp up to 1945. The victims of the Soviet special camp No. 2, which was located on the Ettersberg between 1945 and 1950, played no role at that time.

The political and art-political disputes surrounding Fritz Cremer's group of figures prevented the monument from being completed quickly. Between 1952 and 1954 the artist presented three draft versions of the sculpture. In the course of the work he designed a total of 42 individual figures.

It consists of the "Tower of Freedom", which can be seen from afar, a group of figures by the sculptor Fritz Cremer (1906-1993), a path of stelae and prisoner graves. The memorial was the first national monument of the GDR and is considered by historians today as a testimony to the SED historical policy and the anti-fascist founding myth of the SED state.

On the southern slope of the Ettersberg in Weimar, a memorial visible from afar indicates the many victims of the Buchenwald concentration camp. The memorial is crowned impressively by the sculptural group erected by Fritz Cremer in 1954-58 in memory of the prisoners.
