12월 4, 2025, Monte Carmo Summit Cross
The small sacred monument we encounter on Monte Carmo is perhaps the perfect place for a brief moment of reflection. A few years ago, Christiane Völkel commented on the wonderfully fitting sentence by the Italian poet Francesco Petrarch (who lived in the 14th century), "Everywhere one has heaven above oneself," as follows: "What is the use of prayer? This question moves me (...) I have found for myself the answer and the certainty that when I pray I am with the Lord, or rather, that when I pray he is often noticeably closer to me than usual. Thus, I retain the possibility of pouring out my heart to him (...) This intimacy with him makes me believe in him."

The most famous crucifix in Italy is not found on the tops of the mountains, although of course there are many summit crosses all over the country, such as here on Monte CARMO, but in literature: The author Giovanni Guareschi, spiritual father of the protagonists 'Don Camillo' and 'Peppone', has included another main character in his stories - which are well-known and popular far beyond the country's borders: the crucified Christ, who speaks to Don Camillo from the high altar. The author himself makes the following comment on this: "So you have to explain: if the priests feel insulted by Don Camillo, they can smash a candlestick on my skull for all I care; if the communists are insulted by Peppone, they can break a club in two on my back; but if someone feels insulted by Christ's speeches, there's nothing you can do. Whoever speaks in my stories... is my Christ, that is, the voice of my conscience. My personal business, my affair. And therefore: each for himself and God for all.” (G. Guareschi)

The Gobbo Bridge, also known as the Old Bridge or, indeed, the Devil's Bridge, is a construction of Roman origin which has undergone numerous renovations over the centuries. The building above dates back to the 7th century but traces of an older bridge have been found underneath, prior to the arrival of Colombano. The bridge, which is characterized by an undulating shape, the irregularity of the arches and the fairly narrow roadway, is 280 meters long and joins the two banks of the river through a complicated succession of 11 irregular spans, which differ in span and height, creating an up and down path that runs from one end to the other. The Bobbio Bridge, today used only as a pedestrian crossing, is the very symbol of the city of San Colombano, as well as one of the strangest and most original architectural structures in Italy. Until the 16th century the bridge was made up of a few arches: a large arch on the right bank of the Trebbia with three smaller arches. Over the years, the floods of the river have inflicted several wounds on the stone bridge, which has always been patiently rebuilt, even with substantial modifications, to improve its safety and sturdiness. Around 1590 it began to be extended towards the left bank, based on a design by the master Magnano da Parma, and during the 17th century the bridge came to have 11 arches. For centuries the bridge was a destination for pilgrims and religious processions: crosses and votive images were built on the banks below, some of which are still visible today.

The Gobbo bridge, also known as the Old Bridge or Devil's Bridge, is an ancient bridge characterized by an irregular profile that crosses the Trebbia river. With a length of 273 meters, this bridge was called the Gobbo bridge due to its eleven unequal arches, placed at different heights. Although the exact date of construction is not known, it is assumed that the bridge dates back to Roman times, probably built after the Roman conquest of the Ligurian-Celtic settlement that stood in that area. An ancient legend is linked to the construction of the bridge: it is said that the devil contacted San Colombano, offering to build the bridge in a single night, in exchange for the first mortal soul to cross it. The saint accepted the offer. During the night, the devil called some little devils who helped him build the bridge, supporting the vaults with their own strength. These demons varied in height, which led to the creation of differently sized arches in the bridge. At dawn, the devil showed up at the end of the bridge to collect his "reward". Saint Columbanus sent a little dog to the devil as payment. Deceived, the devil returned to hell, but not before kicking his creation, causing the tilt that gives the bridge its characteristic "hunchback" appearance.

Since the Middle Ages the Via del Sale was used by merchants and peasants who traveled these mule tracks to bring their goods to Liguria and vice versa. On board the wagons, pulled by oxen or horses, wine, cheese, potatoes and grains were transported, while on their return they brought home olive oil and above all the salt, precious for the preservation of food.
