Located over the Saône River between Verjux and Gergy, the bridge was inaugurated in 1890. This elegant stone structure was financed by Marguerite Boucicaut. Destroyed in 1944, it was rebuilt in 1957 with a metal deck while retaining its original decorative bollards.

Originally, the Saint-Jean-de-Losne bridge was made of wood and crossed the river diagonally by road no. 27 linking Dijon to Losne. It started on the right bank, a little downstream from the current bridge, and then joined the old Seurre road. The structure was destroyed many times by floods and ice break-ups, but was always rebuilt in the same place until 1830. It was rebuilt in stone from 1833, then rebuilt again after being cut down during the war of 1870… The bridge suffered damage from the war twice more. On June 16, 1940, French engineers blew up an arch, and on September 7, 1944, the retreating Germans dynamited the rest. It was then replaced by a temporary wooden footbridge. After the liberation, the reconstruction work was put out to tender. After all these twists and turns, the bridge was finally rebuilt in the same place in 1950.

Rue du Chatelet is a pretty pedestrian street in the center of Chalon-sur-Saône. A beautiful place to stroll through the architectural heritage of the city.

Central square!! Chalon-sur-Saône [ʃa.lɔ̃.syʁ.soːn] is a French town in the Saône-et-Loire department in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region. With 45,031 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2021)[1], it is the largest town in the department, but not its administrative seat, but merely the seat of a sub-prefecture. After Dijon, Chalon is the second largest city in Burgundy. The inhabitants are called Chalonnais and Chalonnaises. The municipality received the "Four Flowers" award in 2022, which is awarded by the Conseil national des villes et villages fleuris (CNVVF) as part of the annual competition for flower-decorated towns and villages.[2]

This historic bridge, dating back to the Middle Ages, is an iconic symbol of the city. Walking along the bridge, you can admire the reflections of the Burgundian houses on the calm waters of the river, as well as the boats that pass quietly by.

For a stopover and a little refreshment, I can recommend the "AU Bistro de la Capitainerie". Here you can sit nicely by the river Doubs before it joins the Saóne.

On Thursdays, there's a small market in the central square, mostly selling regional products. It's very pretty, nestled among the old houses and between the Doubs and Saonne rivers. There are also several cafes and restaurants.
