technical feat - if necessary, the Canal du Midi overflows into the river (l'argent double) that flows underneath it

This is the fastest way, perhaps the only one in the area, to cross the AUDE. From the MOUSSOULENS Lock (Robine Canal) to the GAILHOUSTY Lock (Junction Canal).

The German-language television series "Treasures of the World - Heritage of Humanity" uses short film clips to honor special sites from all eras and continents that have one thing in common: they have been declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. One of the episodes introduces the CANAL DU MIDI: "...the Romans already dreamed of a waterway between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. Powerful people and doers from Charlemagne to Francis the First failed to realize this idea, even Leonardo da Vinci tinkered with it in vain. It was not built until the end of the 17th century. The Canal du Midi is a technical masterpiece by one person, one obsessed with the idea, by Pierre Paul Riquet. ..." "A 240.129 km long, 2.25 to 2.50 m deep waterway was declared a cultural monument as a "bridge" between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic with 328 structures such as bridges - such as the canal bridge over the Orb -, locks - such as the 7 lock cascades of Fonserrannes -, tunnels, aqueducts and 49 canals over streams and rivers." says the documentary from "Treasures of the World - Heritage of Humanity", a television series that brings culture-loving viewers closer to world cultural heritage sites with short film contributions (in German). 2월 7, 2025, Via Domitia

The first city founded by the Romans in Gaul, Narbo Martius (Narbonne) played a leading commercial role under the Roman Empire. Its port, built under the domination of Rome, encouraged trade with the Mediterranean world, while the Via Domitia strengthened trade with southern Gaul and Spain. The Via Domitia is a Roman road built from 118 BC to connect Italy to the Iberian Peninsula by crossing Narbonne Gaul. The Via Domitia was created from 118 BC at the instigation of the Roman general Cneus Domitius Ahenobarbus, whose name it would bear. This road was to ensure communications with Rome and allow the founding of garrisons to protect cities that had become Roman. https://www.amisdesmusees-narbonne.org/la-via-domitia

We pass along the Canal du MIDI to arrive at the small port so characteristic of SOMAIL. A picture-postcard landscape when the blue sky and the sun accompany you.

I am not a sports cyclist I cycle for fun short distances up to 30 km home and away. and because it is necessary for shopping and something to see in a city so that the camper can stay at the camper place or camping. but this was a nice trip with a terrace a chat and back to Carcason. there is only one disadvantage you cycle the same way back when you drive there. So on the way there you look left on the way back right or the other way around then it is solved.

This structure, born from the recommendations made by Vauban to improve the Canal du Midi, was built in 1693. It is one of the most original structures on the Canal du Midi with its eleven-arched bridge. The function of this structure is to evacuate excess water from the canal to the Argent-Double River. This evacuation is done in two ways. The first is by evacuating surface water by means of a spillway (overflow system) at the point where the bank is lowest at the level of the arches of the structure. The water that spills then falls in a cascade to the Argent-Double River below. After the surface water has been evacuated, the second means of evacuation of the structure is the spillway itself, that is to say, a bottom valve, which allows, with the action of man, to evacuate the water through the bottom. During maintenance work carried out in winter, this reach (portion between two locks) is emptied by this means. A passage on the arches is built in order to maintain a "dry" continuity for the towing horses and avoid the slippery and perilous passage that this spillway presented. (Text from: La Redorte and works of the Argent-Double)

From the Canal du Midi, the vision of the Château d’Argens emerges. This residence belonged to the lords of Sérame. Formerly known under the Roman name of Villa Arsegii, the imposing manor takes its name from the Latin argilla. Neighboring the castle is a geological site composed of sandstone and clay renowned for their quality which gives its name to the place. Dominating the eponymous medieval village, this residence is rich in a history of more than 900 years.

Superb site on the banks of the Canal du Midi

Superb site, at the downstream outlet of the Jonction canal on the Aude river. This canal, put into operation in 1787, allows to make the connection between the Canal du Midi and the Canal de la Robine de Narbonne. The Gailhousty site consists of a lock, a spillway, a bridge and a dry dock. Upstream of the lock, the canal is protected from the floods of the Aude thanks to a system of dikes which surround it up to Sallèles-d'Aude. Downstream of the lock is a space designed to be able to be submerged during heavy floods: the spillway. The bridge is designed to allow rapid access to all points of the site, is of a neat architecture, with a low arched vault and four quarter-circle staircases placed at each corner. In times of flood, it is necessary to be able to react quickly and maneuver the defense systems in time. Placed on the downstream head of the lock, it participates in the system of containing the strongest floods. The monumental spillway, 30 meters long, is located on the left bank of the canal between the Gailhousty lock and the Aude. Its front facade on the canal side is pierced with vertical crenellations that plunge into the water. At the back, it has 5 arched openings at the foot of which launches an 8km long landing channel called "La saignée" directed towards the Capestang pond. This building houses no less than 15 oversized valves. It is not intended to evacuate excess water from the Jonction canal but must allow the passage of flood water from the Aude river. Originally, it was planned that this water loaded with fertile silt would be directed into the Capestang pond to fill it and promote crops there.

It is one of the most emblematic places on the canal: its buildings, its chapel, its inn, its humpback bridge, its stores, bear witness to the activity of the time around the canal. Once the work on the canal was finished, an administration was set up to manage navigation on the canal. Seven divisions were created along the canal. The Somail division covered 45 km. A passenger transport service was also set up, the stop at the Somail inn corresponded to the third day of navigation from Toulouse. The building even had a dungeon...
