8월 17, 2025, Porte des Allemands
Of the original 17 city gates, only the German Gate in the east remains. Named after the former hospital of the Teutonic Order, which stood nearby, it was built as an entrance to the city on a bridge over the Seuille River. A medieval structure straight out of a picture book.

The Middle Bridge, originally called the Middle Pont des Morts, and the Pont des Morts (Bridge of the Dead), an extension of the former, owe their names to their construction: they were financed by the Saint-Nicolas Hospital, which sold the best garment from a deceased resident of Metz. The Middle Bridge was once fortified. Walking along the banks of the Moselle, you can still see the opening from which the gate was lowered to block access to the city from the river.

On the banks of the Moselle, between Metz and Nancy, rises one of the most beautiful baroque abbeys in France: the Abbaye des Prémontrés. Built between 1705 and 1735, it was the spiritual and intellectual centre of the order of the Prémontrés. The abbey is a masterpiece of Lorraine architecture: a monumental staircase, elegant cloisters, a serene garden and an impressive façade make this a place where history becomes tangible. Once a religious stronghold, later a hospital and seminary, today a vibrant cultural centre and hotel.

Each of these crosses that the biker encounters in the villages or in the fields is a sign of remembrance of the crucifixion, but also of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. "Here on earth there is His memory, but in the kingdom of heaven there is His presence: this presence is the joy of those who have already reached salvation. The memory is our consolation, as we are still wanderers, traveling towards our homeland." (Bernard of Clairvaux)

The Saint-Étienne Cathedral (German: St. Stephen's Cathedral) in Metz in Lorraine was built between 1220 and 1520 and is considered one of the most beautiful and largest Gothic church buildings in France. With a vault height of more than 41 meters, it has the third highest interior after the cathedrals of Amiens and Beauvais; the area of its stained glass is around 6500 m², the largest in a French cathedral, hence the name La lanterne du Bon Dieu - English: "The Lantern of the Good Lord". It is therefore also one of the masterpieces of the Gothique Rayonnant. It is the episcopal church of the diocese of Metz. Since 1930, the cathedral has been classified as a monument historique (cultural monument) and protected.

An awe-inspiring place: wonderful windows in a sacred space that remains silent and yet tells so much of its history. One of the most impressive cathedral buildings in Europe!

Unlike Kermit, I think that a visit to the abbey is definitely worth it, just to look at the round and oval staircase! And staying overnight in this setting (you don't have to pay an entrance fee) is worth the price of the night. The breakfast is a good basis for a long day on the bike.

The former Premonstratensian abbey of Sainte-Marie-Majeure (Great Saint Mary) in Pont-à-Mousson, a municipality in the Meurthe-et-Moselle department in the French region of Grand Est (formerly Lorraine), was built in the early 18th century in the Baroque style. The abbey, which covers an area of 12,000 square meters, is considered one of the most important monastery complexes in Lorraine. In 1910, the church and parts of the abbey, and in 1919 the entire monastery complex, were added to the list of architectural monuments (Base Mérimée) in France as a monument historique (Wikipedia). The exterior of the abbey is very impressive, the interior even less so. The complex was actually converted into a hotel. For € 10 per person, you see relatively little and it is actually a demolition!

6월 11, 2024, Gorze–Metz Roman Aqueduct (Jouy-aux-Arches)
The aqueduct connecting Gorze to Metz is a Roman aqueduct built at the beginning of the second century. Divodurum (Metz) is the capital of the Mediomatris, at the crossroads of the south-north and east-west axes, i.e. on the Roman roads from Lyon to Trier and from Reims to Strasbourg. The city, which had about 20,000 inhabitants in the second century, needed a supply of spring water to supply the fountains, the three Roman baths, the public latrines and the craftsmen. The exact distribution points are not known because no trace remains (Wikipedia).
