This impressive aqueduct is emblematic of the region. It was built at the beginning of the 2nd century and had the function of transporting drinking water from the source of "bouillons de Gorze" to the thermal baths and the fountain of Metz, formerly Divodorum.

The aqueduct was 22 kilometers long at its origin. It spanned the Moselle valley for more than a kilometer. Today, there are 16 arches that can be seen on this site in Jouy-aux-Arches and 7 arches on the side of Ars-sur-Moselle.

The aqueduct connecting Gorze to Metz is a Roman aqueduct built at the beginning of the second century.

Divodurum (Metz) is the capital of the Mediomatris, at the crossroads of the south-north and east-west axes, i.e. on the Roman roads from Lyon to Trier and from Reims to Strasbourg. The city, which had about 20,000 inhabitants in the second century, needed a supply of spring water to supply the fountains, the three Roman baths, the public latrines and the craftsmen. The exact distribution points are not known because no trace remains (Wikipedia).

The aqueduct of Jouy-aux-Arches is a fascinating historical site, located near Metz. It is a Roman aqueduct built in the 2nd century to transport drinking water from the Moselle to the thermal baths of Barbegal, near Arles.

The Jouy-aux-Arches aqueduct is an imposing structure that is almost 2 kilometers long and includes more than 10 stone arches. It is considered one of the most beautiful Roman aqueducts in France. It was listed as a historical monument in 1840.

The Jouy-aux-Arches aqueduct site is accessible on a guided tour that allows you to discover the history of this unique structure and understand its importance in the history of Roman engineering. You will also enjoy beautiful views of the surrounding countryside and the Moselle from the arches of the aqueduct.

The aqueduct is very impressive, especially when you compare the size of the houses underneath and consider how old it is.

In Jouy-aux-Arches, twelve arches of a Roman-era viaduct have been rebuilt. Originally, a water pipe with 100 bends spanned the entire river valley.

A mega-construction, the importance of the Moselle region already in the 2nd century. makes clear. Gigantic and impressive. In full length it is said to have been the longest known aqueduct of this type from ancient times.

The highlight is ok, although the aqueduct on the other side of the Moselle is more impressive. The way there, supposedly a bike path between the railway line and the Moselle, is a disaster, maybe with an MTB, not with a touring bike.

A Roman aqueduct in Jouy-aux-Arches. These are the remains of the Roman aqueduct route from Gorze to Metz.

The flow direction of the aqueduct led from the Moselle in the west to the east through the town of Jouy-aux-Arches and further northeast to Metz. The French name is Aqueduc de Gorze à Metz. The double covered canal is unique for Roman aqueducts. It is not known exactly why there were 2 canals, the most likely explanation is that the walls quickly wore out due to the steep gradient of the aqueduct, and with 2 canals one could be renewed without interrupting the water supply.

It's great that the cycle path goes right past here. This aqueduct dates back to the 1st century and was 22 km long, presumably having 110 arches. The tallest arch measured 32 meters. Today, 16 arches remain here. Another seven arches stand in Ars-sur-Moselle.
