As early as 1891, a 12-meter-high wooden structure was erected "on the slope" at the gentle incline of the Schurwald forest towards the Fils and Neckar valleys – a precursor to today's 14-meter-high observation tower, which was built in 1938 from locally sourced Angulatensandstein to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Swabian Alb Association. Until 1949, the only building near the tower was the Stumpenhof farm. No more land could be designated for development in the valley, so new settlements had to be built on the slopes above. The view down into the Neckar Valley and across to the nearby chain of the Swabian Alb mountains is exceptionally scenic. When the sun reflects in the Neckar River and the gravel pit lakes around midday, and the Swabian Alb emerges from the haze over the foothills, a fairytale magic descends upon the landscape.
