A monumental tree planted when the estate still functioned as a fortified house, and what's less known is that for decades it served as a landmark for the farmers and charcoal burners of the valley: "If you see the cedar, you're already close to Can Valls." Its exaggerated size is no accident: it was used to break the wind that came down from Montseny and protect the crops in the orchards. It still bears old marks from metal fastenings where tools or work ropes were hung. A discreet giant with a true farmhouse history.

I walk through dense woods where a huge pine tree once stood, serving as a landmark for the charcoal burners and shepherds of Montseny. The tree fell decades ago, but its name still marks the spot. The path, surrounded by silence and the scent of resin, retains that feeling of a natural border between two valleys. On clear days, the air here seems cleaner, as if it still holds some of the spirit of the old pine.

About 300 meters before reaching the hermitage along the track from Òrrius, on the left, dry stone walls are preserved, the remains of a shelter used by Republican militiamen during the Civil War. It's not signposted, but it's visible if you get off your bike and explore a bit. The surroundings are very peaceful and steeped in history: the hermitage was also used as a temporary shelter.

Can Valls is a historic 16th-century farmhouse, expanded in the 19th century, located in the Olzinelles Valley, near Sant Celoni. Its natural setting is exceptional, with ornamental and native trees of large size thanks to the climate, the protected environment, and the care of the owners. The trees include cedars, beeches, plane trees, poplars, oaks, holm oaks, and shrubs such as the buckthorn. A walk around the estate reveals the plane tree avenue (24 trees over 36 meters tall in 2004), which leads to the Aranyal pond-washhouse, home to green frogs and duckweed (Lemna minor). In the past, next to this pond was the "carrocera," a facility for storing and repairing carriages and housing barrow carriers. Also noteworthy is a gazebo that was once a well. A quote from 1908 recalls the hospitality of Mr. Piu de Can Valls, known for helping the needy and allowing neighbors to collect firewood or celebrate popular festivals such as May Day in the forests and springs of Arenyal and La Pega.
