7월 11, 2025, Reichel’sche Schleifmühle Museum
The museum is located in a beautiful half-timbered house directly on the Pegnitz River. A beer garden is right next door. It's a very atmospheric spot. This spot is not to be missed.

From Happurg train station via Hersbruck to Lauf and back to the Happurg bathing lake (reservoir). With a coffee break in Lauf and a beer at the bathing lake restaurant. Highly recommended. Have fun.

The list of Lauf castle estates from 1275 mentions the “Mühle am Markt” and three other mills here on the Pegnitz for the first time. At that time the place was not yet fortified - the city wall was only built after 1355. In 1380 it can be read: "... the grinding mill gives the mill 3 fl (florenus aureus = guilders), 1 FH (carnival hen) and the city of Lauf 60 Pfg." The grinder therefore paid taxes (“interest”) to the Mauermühle , this in turn was a fiefdom of the castle and was obliged to make corresponding payments. In 1541, the grinding mill was specifically mentioned together with the Mauermühle (which no longer exists today): “Near the water gate is Michael Nider's grinding mill (5 grinding wheels) “in the walls”, open to the city through a small door. The mill house with grinder and a stable are surrounded by walls. (...) The mill also includes 1 grinding wheel, which drives 3 stones. The owners pay interest into the mill. Millers and grinders each have a key to their wicket door.” https://altstadtfreunde-lauf.de/de/2-gehenswuerdigkeiten/2b-reichelsche-schleif

In 1391 the castle was pledged to Linhard von Henfenfeld by the Wittelsbach dukes, after which other pledge holders and caretakers appeared. In 1419 it was ceded to the brothers Hans, Eberhart and Wilhelm von Mistelbeck, who had claims against Duke Ludwig of Bavaria-Ingolstadt. The handover did not take place because of the Bavarian War. In the Bavarian War between Duke Ludwig of Bavaria-Ingolstadt and his cousins, the Bavarian Dukes of Landshut and Munich, Lichtenstein Castle was conquered and destroyed in June 1421 by Count Palatine Johann von Neumarkt-Neunburg, who was allied with Ludwig's opponents. In the terrain exploration of the imperial city of Nuremberg from 1503 to 1504, in which all castles and fortifications are listed in relation to the Landshut War of Succession that soon followed, Lichtenstein is described as “an old, traditional castle”. An entry in the Salbuch from 1516 also states that Lichtenstein was only a castle stable. The Sulzbach regional court granted the Mistelbeck brothers their right to compensation in 1421 and again in 1422. The castle ruins fell into disrepair; In 1851 the Bavarian state sold it to Paul Willhelm Freiherr Ebner von Eschenbach. Around 1855, in the spirit of the awakening romanticism of castles, he had the pseudo-ruins built on the upper castle using rising masonry and an English landscape garden set up in the area of the lower castle, which, however, also fell into disrepair.[5] Today there is forest around the castle ruins and it is partly overgrown with bushes. Several hiking trails from Pommelsbrunn and the surrounding area lead to the ruins. The medieval remains of Lichtenstein Castle, especially those of the lower castle, are at great risk of decay. The Happurger See (366 m above sea level) is a reservoir embedded in the Hersbrucker Alb, surrounded by the Houbirg (618 m), the Deckersberg (586 m) and Reicheneck. Created in 1955 to generate electricity, the reservoir today delights bathers, sailors, cyclists and hikers, especially in summer. Great path around the lake. Whether Nordic walking, cycling or hiking, the circular route is ideal for this. Route length about 4 km. We recommend the lakeside terraces, a café and restaurant.

The lake is fed by the Happurger Bach and its left tributary Kainsbach. The Happurg[2] pumped storage power plant of the Fränkisches Überlandwerk, which went into operation in 1958 (which was later taken over by E.ON and today belongs to Uniper), used the lake as a sub-basin. The associated upper basin is on the Deckersberg. The average size of the lake is around 55 hectares. The lake gets its name from the neighboring town of Happurg. It was built by the Nuremberg architect and culture prize winner of the city of Nuremberg Franz Reichel.
