10월 3, 2024, Brandy Bottom Colliery Ruins
Brandy Bottom Colliery, located just off the Bath-Bristol cycle path, was an important coal mining site in the 19th century, particularly known for its deep mine workings. The site features remnants of the colliery, including old structures and spoil heaps. It operated during a time of significant coal production in the area before eventually closing. Today, it serves as a historical point of interest along the cycling route, illustrating the region's industrial heritage

An excellent section of bike path just off the Bath to Bristol. It is laid with tarmac and goes past the old colliery. Note that towards the end at the woods it can get quite muddy. This is especially so in Winter and especially if you take the fork on to the Dramway towards Westerleigh.

Bristol to Bath Cycle Path - We're so lucky to have this path in our City, however sadly, you must keep your eyes open and remain frosty at all times! Especially when returning to inner city Bristol, passing through Easton and Old Market. If you own an expensive ebike or bike, just be careful as the cycle path has a long history of violent robbery and thefts. It's best to ride in a group if you and your friends are serious cyclists with expensive kit, but if you have to ride on your own, perhaps you're a daily commuter, consider being armed 😉 Or just avoid that section entirely! But once you've escaped the city, it's such a beautiful place to ride one's bike and so quick to get out into the countryside.

Pretty firm in summer, drains well in the spring/autumn. Can be a bit of a mudbath in winter. I've done it on a road bike many times but I would recommend 30mm tyres and above.

The gravel is a bit soft for road tyres but 32 up and you're fine.

5월 20, 2023, Brandy Bottom Colliery
Brandy Bottom Colliery is a former colliery in Pucklechurch, South Gloucestershire, England. It was a steam-powered colliery that operated from the early 19th century until the early 20th century. The colliery was located on the line of the Dramway, a horse-drawn railway that was used to transport coal from the Coalpit Heath area to Bristol. The earliest written record of Brandy Bottom Colliery dates from 1837, when a shaft was sunk at the site. The colliery was owned by a number of different companies over the years, including the East Bristol Collieries Company and the Avon Industrial Buildings Trust. The colliery closed in 1936 and has been derelict ever since. Brandy Bottom Colliery is a scheduled ancient monument and is a popular spot for historical walks and bike rides. The colliery is also home to a number of rare plants and animals, including the lesser horseshoe bat.

Opened in 1918 the signal box controlled the level crossing here. The railways closed between 1966 and 1968 but a local chap rented the box and thus stopped it being destroyed. It's now a grade 2 listed building and was restored by the council. Today the friends of the area look after the box, cafe and community garden.

4월 5, 2023, Staple Hill Tunnel
Staple Hill tunnel is a disused railway tunnel that was originally part of the Midland Railway's Mangotsfield and Bath Branch Line, which connected Bristol and Bath. The tunnel runs for approximately 1.1 miles (1.8 km) through the hillside, and was opened in 1869. It is now an iconic part of the Bristol-Bath railway cycling path. The cycle path takes up less than half the width of the tunnel and the rest of the floor consists of uneven rocks. The tunnel is lit all year-round, but cyclists are advised to turn their lights on. The roof leaks in places, giving the appearance of rain.
