This is one of England's tallest remaining maypoles. It is a striped pole that stands over 20 metres high. It has been present since the days of Shakespeare, and its original incarnation was made of wood (until it was struck by lightning and destroyed). The current pole is made of aluminium and is officially a Grade II historical monument listed by English Heritage.

Two iconic hiking routes intercept here. Also, for cyclists, this is famous for being part of NCN 442, which leads to Chipping Campden.

A recent "renovation" has covered half the Greenway (the half closer to Stratford) in loose pea gravel. It is an uncomfortable and unstable ride and very frustrating compared to the much nicer second half, even if the second half is narrower and has a few potholes here and there. Best to come prepared for that.

The church in Blockley was dedicated to the two Saints PETER & PAUL, also known as the "Prince of the Apostles". (Chapter 16, Verse 19). * Paul was initially an opponent of the Christian movement and was not called to the apostleship by Jesus Christ during his lifetime like the other apostles, but was only converted later with the famous "Damascus experience". His attribute is the sword with which he was executed. According to the Roman law of the time, such a sentence was a "privilege" (quick death and not, like other forms of execution, a long, painful death struggle) that was reserved for the citizens of Rome.

The Hall was built in the reign of Charles I and throughout its chequered history has seen calamitous events including being extensively damaged from a gunpowder explosion in 1643. Just over a century later the Hall was actually pulled down but re-built the following year. In 1863 major alterations resulted in a Hall very much as you see it today. Ill fate dogged it again in 1946 when fire, started from a cigarette, completely gutted the beautifully proportioned Ballroom, when a valuable painting by Gainsborough of David Garrick was destroyed. One of England’s most famous historic high streets - best visited in low season as it’s very popular with tourists.

Lovely Cotswold pub in the centre of beautiful Cotswold village, they always have several excellent beers on taps and tasty bar snacks (the chips are excellent) as well as meals for the hungry walker.

Quite busy with walkers at weekends. Speed limited to 5mph with some narrow sections.

The Church of St Peter and St Paul in Blockley is Norman, built in around 1180. The church was extended on the north side towards the end of the 13th century. Several other additions have been made over the last few hundred years and now only one of the original Norman Lancet windows remain.

Nice cup of tea and lemon drizzle cake, very friendly place.

Great views over the racecourse from the Greenway. Nice benches so you can sit and admire the view or even watch the racing if you are very lucky.

Quirky converted train carriage that's a great little cafe. Well placed on the Stratford-upon-Avon Greenway just outside Stratford. Closed on Mondays but open 9am to 4pm every other day.
