Heavy building materials are transported along the canal, including for building the church, bridges and locks in the polders, and for maintaining the sea defences. Large loads of stones are transported inland, originating from the many brick kilns in the polders and intended for major construction activities, including in Bruges. The canal remained navigable until the 19th century.
