6월 24, 2025, Lissenweegs Vaartje anno 1271
Lissenweegs Vaartje also called the Lisseweegse Watergang was dug in 1271. Historical explanation: The Lisseweegs Vaartje provides a good connection to Bruges. Heavy building materials are transported along the canal, including for building the church, bridges and locks in the polders, and for maintaining the sea defences. Large loads of stones are transported inland, originating from the many brick kilns in the polders and intended for major construction activities, including in Bruges. The canal has been provided with dikes on both sides since 1279. Around 1750, a lock was built in Zwankendamme and a canal (the Noordvaart) was extended to behind the Graaf Jansdijk. The canal remained navigable until the 19th century. With the construction of the Bruges-Zeebrugge harbour, the last 1500 metres of the canal will be diverted to the west, it will be given a new course along the Pathoekeweg and will flow into the Bruges-Oostende canal. A beautiful, straight bike path along the Boudewijn Canal. Just watch out for the mussels dropped by the seagulls, and it's a very pleasant ride.

In the 13th and 14th centuries, this inlet—'t Zwyn—was a major waterway to Bruges. This waterway was created after the sea encroached deeply on the land around the beginning of the Common Era. The cities of Bruges, Damme, and Sluis were situated on the Zwin and became thriving trading centers. However, the channel became increasingly shallow and eventually unnavigable. Therefore, the Zwin was later largely reclaimed. Nature then took over. Source: https://www.hetzeeuwselandschap.nl/natuurgebieden/het-zwin

The Zwin is a tidal flat: a beach plain behind the dunes that is openly connected to the sea. Immediately behind the estuary lies a sandy beach, further inland lie dunes and salt marshes. Behind the dune range lie two small polders, managed by the Zeeuwse Landschap: the Kievittepolder and the Oudelandsepolder. In the Zwinweide, once a side channel of the Zwin, there is a highly diverse area where freshwater and saltwater alternate within a short distance. Thanks to the alternation between wet and dry, saltwater and freshwater, and clay and sand, the entire area boasts a wide variety of vegetation and birdlife. Shepherd's Chapel is a wooden field chapel with Mary in the leading role. The original chapel from the 19th century (1850) was founded in gratitude for healing by a shepherd. In the 20th century it was replaced by this arrangement. An inscription in "Heavenly Mary Blue" has the following message: 'You who pass here on horseback or on foot honor Mary with a Hail Mary'.
