The renovation was successful. If you come from Jena you drive over and then up to the Dornburger castles. There is also a good view of the castles from the bridge.

Beautiful castle ruins with a wonderful view. There are various hiking trails to the Kunitzburg. It is recommended to just walk along the horseshoe, then you come to the beautiful Jenzig.

One of the highlights in the area. Three completely different castles in different styles and a very nice view of the Saale valley. The garden is also beautifully landscaped.

There was a castle in the town, which was built in 1482 by Burkhard Schenk von Tautenburg. The last of the Tautenburg family, Christian Schenk von Tautenburg, died in this castle on August 3, 1640. He had previously watched as his 22-year-old wife, Countess Reuss, and his children died on November 25, 1631, and his castle in Frauenprießnitz went up in flames on May 12, 1638. The local castle was demolished in 1780 and its stones and building parts were used to rebuild the Frauenprießnitz castle. (Wikipedia)

The first documented mention of the Tautenburg dates back to 1223. It came into the possession of the Schenken von Vargula before 1232. A branch of the Schenken, who named themselves after the Tautenburg, settled here until 1640. It is not known when the first village settlement developed below the castle, but it probably happened soon after the castle was built. The castle and the adjacent forest were initially given as a fief to the Lords of Lobdeburg-Saalburg as sub-vassals of the empire. When Hartmann IV of Lobdeburg-Saalburg died without a male heir, Emperor Frederick II transferred the imperial fief to the Tautenburg Schenken in 1243. (Wikipedia)

Medieval castle ruins on the Gleißenberg north of Jena.

It is often assumed that the complex was built as a castle for a family of imperial ministers around the middle of the 12th century. The castle was first mentioned in a document in 1223. In 1227 the knight Tuto von Tautenburg was mentioned again in connection with a donation. At this time, the Tautenburg was in the hands of the Lords of Lobdeburg-Saalburg. (Wikipedia)

The complex is divided into two parts, of which some ditches and terraces are still visible. In the southeast corner of the western, older part, a pentagonal gate tower with battlements and a gateway has been preserved, which is often mistakenly referred to as a keep. Its chronology is unclear; it is usually dated to the first half of the 13th century, but this is obviously based on the first mention. A section of wall with opus spicatum and no lime mortar could indicate an earlier construction, but this type of walling technique is also possible after 1200 and up to the middle of the 13th century. Another dating support is a small quatrefoil window, which also dates to around the second third of the 13th century. The gate tower could therefore also be connected to new construction, conversions or extensions by the steward Rudolf II of Vargula after he acquired the castle in the 1230s and 40s. This also applies to the strong remains of the walls of a north-east wing, which supposedly housed the chapel mentioned in a building inscription from 1232. To the west, a three-storey residential building was attached to the tower, which is said to have had bay turrets on the north side. Source: Wikipedia

10월 29, 2023, Kunitzburg Ruins

Gleißberg Castle, now mostly called Kunitzburg after the Jena district of Kunitz below, is the ruins of a hilltop castle at 325 m above sea level. NN (foundation walls) five kilometers northeast of the city at the northern end of the so-called "horseshoe". This is formed by the Jenzig and the steep Großer Gleisberg, which projects west into the Saale Valley. The ruins belong to the Kunitz corridor, but the border with the Golmsdorf corridor runs a few meters down the slope. Source: Wikipedia

The middle of the three castles was built in the 18th century as a rococo castle according to plans by Gottfried Heinrich Krohne. A landscape garden in front of the Renaissance castle and a geometrically designed garden with a rose arcade at the Rococo castle combine the ensemble into a picturesque unit.
