무차 운하(총 길이 61km)는 아다강의 지류로 최근 800주년을 맞이했으며, 유럽에서 가장 오래된 운하 중 하나입니다. 수세기 동안 약간의 변화를 거친 이 운하의 이름은 기원전 90년에 이곳으로 이주하여 최초의 개간 작업을 시작한 로마 가문 Mutia의 이름을 여전히 기억하고 있습니다. 넓은 운하에서 갈라져 나오는 작은 수로들은 약 1000km에 달하는 농촌 지역을 관통하며 주로 농업용 관개에 사용됩니다. 주변의 시골과 농가 풍경은 나무 줄기와 탁 트인 들판이 이어지며 인상적입니다. 또한 자연사적 관점에서도 매우 흥미로운데, 이곳은 경로를 따라 관찰할 수 있는 많은 물새들을 끌어들이기 때문입니다.

Despite appearances, the wheel is not a mill, but a noria. Its function, in fact, was never to grind grain or power machinery, but rather to lift water from the canal to channel it into an irrigation system.

We are in Groppello, a hamlet in the municipality of Cassano d'Adda, and we must go back in time to 1618, when Cardinal Federico Borromeo commissioned this large wheel to convey the water needed to irrigate the vegetable gardens and gardens of the Archbishop's Villa. It is said that this majestic work, at the Cardinal's request, was designed by Leonardo da Vinci himself. Which, if anything, adds to its charm.

The cycle path from Lago di Garlate along the Adda River is natural and therefore bumpy, but beautiful. An impressive hydroelectric power plant and a road/rail bridge near Paderno d'Adda showcase architecture from 100 years ago. This bridge is continuously monitored by a measuring system. You can see the monitoring as you cycle up to Paderno from the cycle path.
