Suvereto lies between the hills and the sea of the Etruscan Coast. The medieval village is considered one of the most beautiful in Italy and has also been awarded the Touring Club's Orange Flag. Immersed in the nature of the Val di Cornia, the town is a true treasure: its walls guard the characteristic medieval streets, stone houses, historic buildings, and evocative churches. All around are endless forests of chestnut, oak, and, of course, cork oak trees, from which the town's name derives. Surrounded by the scents of the Mediterranean scrub, Suvereto is a village rich in art and history, distinguished by its pleasant views and its preserved spirit of tranquility and rest.

It's certainly a beautiful city. But cyclists aren't welcome here at all. When I tried to enter from the south, I was accosted violently. So aggressively that I retreated. As a result, I never got to see the old town. There are many comparably beautiful cities with friendly people in Tuscany.

Around the Della Gherardesca castle, on the top of a hill, the medieval village of Castagneto developed with narrow paved alleys, beautiful squares, artisan shops, trattorias. The Palazzo Pretorio is the seat of the Municipality, among the churches, San Lorenzo is one of the oldest buildings, the Santissimo Crocifisso preserves a wooden one from the 15th century. The territory has a close bond with the poet Giosuè Carducci. The poem “Davanti a San Guido” made the avenue famous, with a double row of cypress trees, which connects the oratory of San Guido to the village of Bolgheri announced by the medieval red brick castle. Between Castagneto and Bolgheri the Strada del Vino e dell’Olio Costa degli Etruschi winds. We are in the heart of Bolgheri DOC, home of Sassicaia and other great wines protagonists of the wine history. Numerous cellars and wine shops. The gastronomic offer is rich and varied, enriched by the production of quality extra virgin olive oils. Towards the coast, the WWF Oasis Padule di Bolgheri is a splendid example of the original environment of the upper Maremma and the seaside resort Marina di Donoratico offers a succession of equipped establishments, free spaces and a Blue Flag sea. The entire area is full of welcoming accommodation facilities and is bordered by a large pine forest with a famous playground "Il Cavallino Matto".

Born as Castagneto Marittimo and becoming Castagneto Carducci in 1907 in honor of the famous poet who spent his childhood in these lands, the village is absolutely one of the stops to include in our travel diary during your holiday in Tuscany. Immersed in the Livorno Maremma, in the heart of the Etruscan Coast, unlike other Tuscan villages in the area, with panoramas and glimpses of the coast, not far away we find Bolgheri, with which it is connected by the wonderful Bolgheri road which offers unique scenery, sneaking through vineyards and cultivated fields.
