Start of the Hauraki Rail Trail and the Goldfields historic railway.

I stayed at the old racecourse with a camper van group. It was my second ride to the tunnel Bring a torch or bike light, the over head lights help but are yellow, many people walking and don’t have a light. They just appear out of the darkness. The trail is loose gravel with many cattle stops and narrow bridge’s,Komoot gps was really helpful ,the entrance to the trail was hard to find. But the gps guided me well. My bike is a 20 inch wheel with fat tires a folding bike ,it actually rides the loose gravel better than the worn part used by so many riders.

Just a short cycle down an off-road track takes you to this beautiful waterfall - a perfect spot for a dip.

Prepare for a fairly long and dark section through the old rail tunnel. A great experience. Although it’s well lit, watch out for other cyclists and pedestrians.

Great cafe, shop and restaurant and even on-site accomodation. The steep climb up the drive is worth it!

A bit of an unexpected gravel section - quite tough (but do-able) on a road bike. I didn’t encounter any traffic which was great. The rest of the road is tarmac and a lovely scenic cycle with lots of rolling green hills.

A great link avoiding a big chunk of State Highway 2. Check out the beautiful water at Okere Falls and don’t miss the amazing cafe there.

Highly recommend stopping at this cafe, store and beer garden. The all day menu is delicious - I want to try everything on there! Had a lovely brunch and coffee. It also sells beers and has a great outdoor garden (as well as indoor seating).

Worth a little detour along this peninsula cycleway for a tranquil ride with lovely views of the water as well as Mt Maunganui views at the northern end. Some good picnic spots along here too.

Nice lookout overlooking the water and tiny islands. Beneath the lookout is a fantastic traffic-free cycle path leading to Ōmokorea.

Bicycle rental service and workshop. Trail Kitchens (restaurant) also just behind. Public toilets also in the area, along with a place to wash up your bikes after a muddy ride if you wish!

Strangely no hot coffee when we visited but plenty cold drinks and hot food (burgers, quesadillas, chips) that looked spot on 👌

Excellent views of Rotorua. If going clockwise, there is a signpost 500m before the viewpoint. Plenty of room to stop and admire the view.

For those who haven't completed the trail in a while there have been a number of improvements including the muddy sections and making other sections wider.

Great concrete cycle path surface with less rolling resistance than the road running along side it.

Riding through the reserve is safer and more stunning thank biking the Papamoa Beach Road
