Even a four- or five-meter-high hill, built for visitors, offers a much better overview of the landscape left behind by decades of peat extraction.

5,810 meters of track remain from the Himmelmoor Peat Railway. Built in 1900, it was used to transport peat from the mining area to the peat works on the eastern edge of the moor, operating on constantly changing routes. Small diesel locomotives, some of which were built in-house, pulled the trains carrying the peat floes until mining ended in 2018. Since 2015, the Himmelmoor Peat Railway Association has offered tours on the remaining line. The association maintains the railway and the industrial facilities. Trains are also regularly used for renaturation work.

9월 11, 2025, Kupferteich

The Kupferteich (Copper Pond) on the border of the Hamburg districts of Poppenbüttel and Lemsahl-Mellingstedt was originally a mill pond and served as a copper mill. It is easily circumnavigated by bike or on foot. It was created by damming the Mellingbek and Twelenbek rivers, which flow from the Wittmoor and join in front of the pond, to a height of approximately 900 meters. In the mill at the Kupferteich, a copper hammer was used to produce panels for roofs, ship floors, and boilers for sugar refineries. Remains of fish ponds can be found at the northern end of the Kupferteich. In the mid-19th century, the Kupferteich became a sawmill, later an oil mill, after which the facility fell into disuse. Due to its dilapidated condition, it was demolished in 1929. The Kupferteich is now an approximately 7.0-hectare fishing lake, and since 2019, it, including its shoreline, has been designated a specially protected biotope area under the Federal Nature Conservation Act. A golf course has stretched east and west of the Kupferteich since the 21st century. There is a dog walking area on the western shore of the pond. Access to the Kupferteich is via the 1.5 km long Kupferteichweg, a road that leads to a sandy path leading to the pond. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kupferteich_(Mellingbek)

The Nienwohlder Moor lies on the watershed between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea.[2] It drains to the west into the Lankau, to the south into the Alte Alster, and to the north into the Norderbeste. The nature reserve, which is managed by the Schleswig-Holstein State Hunting Association with the exception of the areas owned by the State Forestry Administration[5],[6] can be almost completely circumnavigated on hiking trails, along which information boards are posted at several locations. In the west, a hiking trail runs through the protected area in the area of the Lunden, a towering moraine ridge.

Today, typical raised moor vegetation can once again be found in the nature reserve, including round-leaved sundew, narrow-leaved cottongrass, bladderwort, white beak sedge, sedge cottongrass, cranberry, as well as cross-leaved heather, rosemary, and common heather. The nature reserve also represents an important habitat for birds. Various wading birds such as the curlew and the common snipe, as well as ducks such as the shoveler, teal, tufted duck, and garganey, as well as meadow pipits, whinchats, and stonechats, are native here. Marsh harriers and short-eared owls can also be found here. The undisturbed moorland is a refuge for cranes, which are now breeding here again. Various woodpecker species, red-backed shrikes, and songbirds are native to the wooded moorland areas. The nature reserve also provides a habitat for various amphibians and reptiles, as well as insects such as dragonflies and butterflies.

The moor was renaturalized in the 1980s through rewetting measures.[2][3] Today, in the area of former industrial use, it is an open raised bog with numerous water-filled peat pits, surrounded by a bog forest. The farmer's hand-cut peat pits at the edge of the moor are often water-filled. Sphagnum moss quaking grassland grows here, and the peat pits are slowly silting up. Further areas are occupied by grassland and forest. Some of the grassland is extensively grazed by robust cattle.[4] Some areas are still intensively used for agriculture, including one arable area.

Peat extraction, first documented in 1804, was initially carried out by peat-cutting by peat-farmers, and the peat was used as fuel. During the Napoleonic Wars of 1806–1813, peat was also shipped to Hamburg via the Alster. In the 20th century, peat extraction became an industrial operation. From 1951 to 1976, the white peat was extracted from an area of 84 hectares, initially by hand and later by machine.[2] East of Nahe, there was a peat loading point on the Elmshorn-Barmstedt-Oldesloe railway.

The nature reserve is located northeast of Hamburg between the towns of Nienwohld, Nahe, Itzstedt, and Sülfeld. It protects a drained and largely peat-extracted raised bog area, which is the largest and best-preserved raised bog remnant in Schleswig-Holstein.[2] To the north, it borders the former Elmshorn-Barmstedt-Oldesloe Railway line.

The approximately 398-hectare nature reserve is registered under number 100 in the register of nature reserves of the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Areas. It was designated in 1982 (date of the regulation: March 25, 1982). The nature reserve replaces the nature reserve of the same name designated in 1980.[1] It is part of the FFH area "Alster system to Itzstedter See and Nienwohlder Moor" and the EU bird sanctuary "Alsterniederung". To the south, it borders the "Nienwohld" landscape protection area. The responsible lower nature conservation authorities are the districts of Stormarn and Segeberg.

The Kupferteich is the former mill pond of a long-demolished copper mill between Lemsahl-Mellingstedt and Poppenbüttel. For this purpose, the Mellingbek and Twelenbek rivers, which come from the Wittmoor and join in front of the Kupferteich, were dammed to a height of around 900 m. At the northern beginning of the Kupferteich and below the former mill dam at the lower end, there are still remains of fish ponds. In the middle of the pond there is a dam that also dams up the northern part. There used to be a campsite with a small restaurant on the western bank. Today the area is set up as a dog run. To the west and east of the Kupferteich there is now an extensive golf course. South of the Kupferteich, between the Poppenbütteler Berg and Poppenbütteler Hauptstraße, there is still a street called Kupferhammer, which is partly laid out as a footpath. After leaving the Kupferteich, the Mellingbek flows into the Alster near Hohenbuchen.

I have driven past here several times and was always impressed by the area and this dam or the dam wall. I happened to discover something on Wikipedia about a former mill that used to stand here. From the 17th to the beginning of the 20th century there was a water mill at the Kupferteich, of which only the mill pond and the dam wall of the mill remain today. The mill was a copper mill that was powered by the 900 meter dammed Kupferteich. Around 1850 the Kupferteich was converted into a sawmill and later into an oil mill. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mellingbek
